Obituary of Helen Johnson MacIntyre

Helen Johnson MacIntyre was born July 7, 1917 in Lascassas, Tennessee, near Murfreesboro. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Daniel C. and Nancy Wynne Johnson. She was a member of several Presbyterian churches her father served. For the last several years she has regularly attended Community Lutheran Church in Sterling. She graduated from Hume Fogg High School in Nashville, Tennessee. She attended two years at Nashville Business College. She and her family moved to Arlington, Virginia and she began working for the Federal Government. She worked for 42 years before her retirement from the Federal Aviation Agency, Department of Transportation. She married in 1943 to Carl Franklin MacIntrye end enjoyed 64 years of marriage before his death in 2007. They moved to Sterling Park in 1964 and lived on West Beech Road until she moved from their home in November 2011.
Mrs. MacIntye leaves one sister Judy Johnson Niemeyer. She was predeceased by one brother, Daniel C. Johnson, Jr. and one sister Nancy Johnson Erickson. She leaves one niece/daughter Gail Hopkins Doerfler and her husband Peter Doerfler. She also leaves several nieces and nephews.
Helen was known for her friendly and vivacious personality. She never met a stranger and was always surrounded by many close friends throughout her entire life. She and her husband worked diligently for over 20 years trying and succeeding in saving portions of the ancient Vestal's Gap Road, which originally ran from the Valley of Virginia to Alexandria. It was a road used by Native Americans as well as the founders of this country, the most famous of which was George Washington. They were also diligent in their attempts to help establish Claude Moore Park in Sterling, Virginia. They have been Friends of the Claude Moore Park since its inception. Two years ago Helen was invited to speak at the dedication and unveiling of the Historical Marker for Vestal's Gap Road. She was honored by the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors on January 31, 2011 for her work in historical preservation. The MacIntyres are honored in Claude Moore Park with plaques and a tree planted in honor of their contributions. In addition Helen served the Cameron Parish Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for several years as its Chaplain. She was very proud of her original prayers and made them into a book, copies of which she has given to dozens of people.
Mrs. Macintyre will be interred with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery. A memorial service will take place at Claude Moore Park on July 6, 2013 at 11:00am, on a portion of the road she was so proud of preserving.
