James Daniel Swinson, age 101, a longtime resident of Fairfax County, passed away on June 16 surrounded by his family. His wife of 45 years, Nancy Cochrane Swinson predeceased him in 1986 and a son, Daniel, predeceased him in 1983. He is survived by: James D. (Evelyn) of Lakeland, FL; Harriet S. Stevens (Edward) of Dennis MA; Clyde J. (Rebecca) of Vienna, VA and Charlotte S. Peed (Carl) of Oak Hill, VA and 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. For the past 18 years he lived with the Peed family in Oak Hill, VA. He served as Sheriff of Fairfax County from 1964-1980. From 1930 to 1960 he served in the United States Marine Corps, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. During his service in the Corps he held every rank from Private to Lt. Colonel. He was an ardent supporter of the Marine Corps Museum and a Lifetime member of the Fairfax County Salvation Army Advisory Board. Visitation and services will be held at a later date with burial planned at Arlington National Cemetery.
