Our memory of Bennett is also of a smiling, full-of-life child whose athletic prowess was evident even in his pre-school years as he swept up the blue ribbons in three-legged and gunny-sack races at the annual Outing Club Fourth of July events. Just as his mother Carolyn did as a child, and her mother Pat before her. Carolyn & Derrick, you are amazing parents with huge hearts and wonderful sons. We are all learning from the strength of your courageous personal examples as you cope with this unimaginable, surreal family loss. I was one of Bennetts Football Coaches this past fall 2012, my heart is broken today. Bennett, one of our players from this past 2012 Championship season has left us way too early. My memories of Bennett are that he was a tough physical player, he always gave great effort but was also most times shy and humble, to the point I would try engage his inner personality while on the practice field. He would smile through his face mask but not say much. I have a picture of Bennett which will forever be etched in my mind; when I heard of this tragedy this picture instantly entered my mind because it happened right in front of me as the clocked ticked off the last second of the game, the conclusion of the championship game. For Bennett to show this amount of outward emotion was not common, but it signified the accomplishment he and the team made that day because it came from him, a quiet leader that could not contain his elation of this moment. This was and will always be my memory of that day. In the picture his feet are 2 feet off the ground as he jumped in the air and pumped his fist as he yelled out YESSSSSSS! It's why I coach, for these kind of moments. You never think it can be the last moment you have, for any of us. So today while we are sad and there appears no explanation for this senseless tragedy, I choose to focus on his life and his time with each of us. Life is fragile, we get busy and forget that most of the time. Tonight say a prayer for Bennett and if you had time and knew him as we on the Bombers did, thank God for that time as well. It was a gift we did not even know we had while it was here.
