One Sunday night during a severe rainstorm, the ceiling pipes burst in the upstairs classrooms of Christ the King's Education wing. Lou was right there Monday morning to step us through what could have been a disaster. He got our claim processed right away. He recommended an excellent cleaning crew and contractor. His patience and humor guided us through a very stressful time. We are all so grateful to have had Lou in our lives.

Lou was a great man. He really helped me out this year with suggestions for running practices and coaching. He has taught me a lot. We talked numerous times this year about how to expand HRYL. In talking to him I got to see how much he loved the game and the organization . I know that enthusiasm has rubbed off on me. Lou is one of the great ones. I appreciate everything he has done for me and my family. It was an honor to know him.

Lou was a good member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Great Falls in years past. He was a great friend and inspiring leader of our children when they were in the Youth Group, and he took them on many memorable outings on the fast water, which was his passion. He was always positive and supporting, and listened to and cared for people. He was an example of a caring man of God, and is missed.

I knew Lou only through Optimist Lacrosse, but that experience was ALWAYS a positive one. I frequently tell the story of how Lou would come over to the sidelines at LAX games and ask spectators to show him their copy of the rule book. When nobody could produce one, he would say "That is Why we have the Referrees -- let them do thier job and don't offer the help." My condolences to the Petersen family. Lou was a true gentleman and patron of LAX.

I am shocked and saddened to hear that Lou is gone. I know Lou through lacrosse; we are fellow commissioners in the Northern Virginia Youth Lacrosse League. Just three weeks ago, Lou was honored to be elected chair of the entire league. Lou truly deserved this recognition. He has served youth lacrosse in Herndon and all of Northern VA for 15 years. I have always admired Lou as one of the good guys, someone who stands above petty politics, who shows genuine care for you, and who is willing to give all of himself in support of a worthy cause. He's is one of those people who greets you with a smile, who you are always happy to see, and who shows true interest in your concerns. Lou has given countless hours of his time and energy to nurture and grow the lacrosse community in Herndon - he deserves to be remembered for his tireless contributions. I deeply admire Lou for what he has accomplished, I will miss him. My condolences go out to Lou's family. While I am sure you are deeply grieved by this loss, I hope you find solace and even pride knowing how much he is valued and respected.
Sincerely,
Dave Cogar

I have known Lou and his family for the years that we were near neighbors in Herndon and during our time together as worshipping and believing Christians at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Herndon. Lou was a well- known Optimist member as well, but I am afraid I was not as involved in Herndon Lacross as was he, but we certainly spoke a lot about that sport with the funny racket! My sincere condolences to his wife and kids Scott, Brent and Brittney. My fond memories with Lou seem to always involve his children--once when Scott was home from college for the weekend, and as we sat at an Optimist meeting in downtown Herndon restaurant, we shared beverages and stories together of Scott and his last year in school. Another was a fond memory of Brittney graduating from Herndon High, and visiting with us "old people" helping to man the all-night graduation party at Herndon community center that year. Lou was a great man, a great father, and a town volunteer possessing immense concern and passion for kids who play sports, for the future of the town and its government, and for the well being of the nation as a whole. Lou lived his faith well, sharing the good news just by caring for people and showing compassion and concern for almost anyone in his circle of friends. My faith convinces me that Lou's life continues in the resurrected body, but my heart tells me that his friendship and spirit of love, in this life, will be missed. I, Lou, look forward to the resurrected reunion, as do all of your family and friends. The Peace of the Lord be with you always.
Respectfully, Ken and Dorothy Grimm (formerly Herndon, now Gainesville, VA)

My husband and I met Lou soon after we moved to Herndon in 1998. He and my husband coached lacrosse together and had a shared hobby of paddling. I had the pleasure of doing a river trip with him and my husband did several. He knew us before we were married and had kids. Years later he was such a welcome face to see at practices and games once my son started playing lacrosse. I also enjoyed seeing him in the early mornings at Herndon Community Center, he'd be there to swim, and I'd be there grumpy in the fitness room while my son swam. A wave from Lou would lift my spirits. I could count on seeing him not only at lacrosse games but at lacrosse practices. One day this spring he made an executive decision that it was too cold for the younger kids to practice, I could tell he was torn between his hard cord devotion to the game and not wanting to freeze the little guys. He stayed with the kids until they were all picked up. I was very touched when this spring he came to the end of year party for a my son's U13 C team, despite a giant thunderstorm. He cared so much about each player. My heartfelt condolences to the Petersen family, what a wonderful guy.

How only for a brief time I had the privilege to have Lou in my life but how he has so touched my life along with our extended, spectator family, on the lacrosse field. That walk, that straw hat and that request for coaches and score keepers will forever be embedded in my mind, He did well at getting me to coach my son's first lacrosse season and later had me and my nursing experience load the injured in my car when he could not get his through the gate! What a wonderful man and I thank God for each and every memory, Rest in peace my friend.
