Teresa was my teacher in my senior year at the Saint Louis High School in Baguio City, Philippines. I was part of the production of the Flower Drum Song just months before Graduation day. I was to play the father of the central character Mei Li. IN the middle of the production, the other teacher who was musical director, had an emergency and she had to leave the city during that time. Boots asked the cast if anyone played the piano, and I, being born in a musical family, played "by ear" and knew the basics of the music book. So I raised my hand, a small squeak that was to change my life forever! The next day she came with the whole book of the play along with records and disc player. I was instructed to play and play them over and over until I could play them "by ear" without the book. Which I did, and Boots marked in the book for music intro, accompaniment and ending (all within few weeks of memorizing them by ear. I was supposed to be the father of Mei Li in the play, but I ended up in the program COVER as the Music director! The divine hand intruded and the play became a success. Thereafter, she brought me along with her visits to the slums and emote barrios of northern Luzon, seeing and hearing her about the Church's compassion for the poor. In those meetings of community leaders where she brought me along, a professor of the University of the Philippines (UP) eventually recruited me into the university without having taken the entrance exams. She and the Dean laughed when I could only show grading cards of Excellence in Latin and English, which eventually nailed me to the university, with BA degree in Sociology, MA in Business Management, and MA in Social and Development Studies!!! All of which were Boots' divinely inspired Fault" among my many God-sent blessings through Boots's heart and hands. I never saw her again thoughout my college and graduate studies,, only seeing her after three decades in the papers as Director of the department of land reform. We could not communicate either written or by phone. It was enough for me to learn what she had done for the poorest people of the country in the remotest barrios that she brought me to. I still hear her laughter, the beat of her heart's excitement as old men, women and their children/grand children came out of their huts when they saw our mission bus. Sadly we could not reach each other for known/unknown reasons. She's locked in my mind and heart, my angel as I continue the course of her love of neighbor and country, here and in the next life. By the way, the one who played Mei Li continued with the play, and I ended up marrying her years after that. Now this line will keep Boots laughing in the eternities with joy! When I save enough I will visit her grave. God bless you all and thanks to all of you out there! Manny

I first met Boots at the Philippine Embassy in the late 1980's. My brother, Robert Villanueva, referred me over to a meeting with Tanghalang Pilipino. Boots welcomed me with her contagious smile and her passion for the performing arts. Although I had put my dancing career on hold, Boots insisted I work with the members of the group. She made me a part of the TP family and encouraged me to share my talents with others. I spend many days and hours with our TP family and Boots always opened up her home to others. If someone did not have a place to stay, her couch was always available. She loved to mentor others and helped many of the children come out of their shell. As I watched Wally and Lara grow up, Boots and Gerry were also there for my children and me. We had such great times together and I wish I could hug you one last time. I love and miss you, Boots. You brought the love of dance back for me and I will love you for that.

Tita Boots, to most, but Tita Ganda (beautiful) to us. She does deserve her alias. She was not only beautiful outside but inside as well. She always had a happy disposition. No matter what you put before her, she would always smile. I think her mantra was to smile first, and think later.
I will miss her for the times we would discuss about business and love life... not just mine, but of everyone we knew. I think we enjoyed talking about the latter more.
I will always remember that when she cooked, expect it to be as salty as the Dead Sea. She had this thing for keeping salt, MSG, patis (fish sauce), and soy sauce somewhere in the cupboards and even under the sink.
There was also this time when we were trying to eat healthy, so we would take the chicken skin out before baking. Of course, our Tita Ganda would keep them somewhere, only to deep fry them later when we were all out of the house. She'd always leave some for us though...
Tita, you know we love you. Don't worry about everyone here. We'll take care of Tito Gerry. Lara and Wally are super fine kids/adults... And thanks for sharing your life with us.

Auntie Boots life legacy to the Philippine Government is very admirable by many but for us her family we will not remember her as the cabinet member of Former President Corazon Aquino nor the Presidential adviser of former President Joseph Ejercito Estrada.
We will remember her as a God fearing person, a family oriented women. A loving mother to Lara and Wally, a loving wife to Kalog . We would be constantly be reminded of her contagious smile that can light up the room just by her smile and presence.
She's a very gutsy lady that can take any challenge even go on para-sailing at the age of 70. We will surely miss you alot but like you just said to me a few months ago when my dad was hospitalize you told me to hang in there and the Lord will embrace you and all of your fears.
Now that you're physically gone i will embrace the Lords will again. Rest Now Kalog as uncle jerry would call you. Be at peace with Our Lord.
We Love you and you will be forever remain in our Hearts.

I was so pleased when your Mom said "Let's go to the PI". I never dreamed that that would become a reality. She helped make it come true and finish my final business with my Father's cremains. He wanted to go back to the PI and I told my Mother that I would take Daddy back someday, but I didn't know when. Boots made it all happen. God bless her. She taught me about, faith, love, and love of family and just how important each and everyone of these is. She loved God with her whole heart and then she loved her husband Jerry. Her children were the apple of her eyes and the grandchildren were the delight of every day. She loved her family so much, don't ever doubt that. And now, I see her in heaven, with a smile on her face, saying"This is what it is all about". She is happy and with those that have gone before us. What a Celebration that must be, to be sitting at the feet of out Lord. Rest in piece, Theresa Jumat, for you have been a Piece Maker all of your life. You now have your reward in heaven. We shall miss you, but you will never be forgotten. You are etched on our hearts forever. My love forever, Jim and Victoria Baum
