Benjamin Harold Hicks, Jr. On Sunday, September 29, 2013, Benjamin Harold Hicks, Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of family and friends. He was born in Richmond, VA, on December 13, 1945, to Harold and Carey Smith Hicks. Raised in Petersburg, VA, he attended Virginia Military Institute, Brother Rat, 1968. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy, class of 1969. He served as Combat Information Center Officer aboard the USS Horne and the USS England. After completing two tours of duty to Viet Nam, he was an instructor at the Fleet Combat Direction Systems, Point Loma. He returned to civilian life in 1974 as a Senior Systems Engineer. For nearly 20 years, Ben was a college baseball umpire with NVBUA. He expressed his love of music by playing the trumpet and guitar in many groups playing everything from gospel to rock and roll. Since 2007, he found contentment at Lake of the Woods, Virginia, while boating and fishing. Ben is survived by his wife of 44 years Mary Lynn, a son Joseph Benjamin Hicks (Eliza), a daughter Mary Cheely 'Molly' Larson (Jeff), a granddaughter Margaret Archer Larson, and a brother Donny Hicks. He was predeceased by his youngest brother, William Wayne Hicks. A memorial service will be held at Galilee United Methodist Church, Sterling, VA, on Saturday, October 5 at 2:00pm. At his request, his remains will be scattered near Triton Light at the United States Naval Academy. In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted by the Washington Animal Rescue League at www. warl.org. In order to honor the outstanding care and compassion of the ICU Unit at Inova Loudoun Hospital, donations may also be made to www.foundation.inova.org.
