When I think of John I think of several things. The first is that he hired me. I will always be in his debt for that. I then think of our carpool and the insight I got from him during those rides. I remember waiting for the other members of the carpool in your home and seeing John and Laura come sleepily down the stairs to breakfast. I think of John's yellow (Chevette?) car. In the winter I tried to wear heavier clothes if we were riding in it as the back seat was always a bit chilly. The day John changed jobs and the carpool was officially over was a very sad day for me.
I miss John's emails. I regret that I could not come back after retiring to go to what would be the last chemist's lunch, but I was afraid to leave my Mom alone with my Dad's care. My Dad got shingles in his eye, head and face this last summer, fell, still has horrible pain and is now in a nursing home as a result.
I am so glad that I have the chance to communicate with you and let you know that you are not alone in remembering John. Teri Piper

Dear Joanie, Laura, and John - I am so sorry for the passing of John. Many years ago I was at your mom and dad's house over New Years. I was in town because I accepted a job in the DC area and your Dad took me to find my first apartment in Pentagon City. That was many years ago, but your dad's kindness has never been forgotten. I had an occasion to meet Mr. Nakovich a few years ago. He came with Mrs. Nakovich to my home where I had a garage gym and strongman training facility. His son, John, was/is a good friend of mine and we were training partners. I thought it was great that Mr. Nakovich actually worked out along side us and even tried doing a strongman implement or two. Later, when his son moved back to Virgina, he told me that he and his dad would work out along side each other at the same gym, and spot each other. I thought this was really cool, and always envied my friend having that type of relationship with his father.

My Dad was the bravest man I have ever known. He was a fighter through until the end. Even though his health was not what it once was, you hardly ever heard him complain. During the times when my heart hurts I will remember the strength that God gave my Dad, and that which sustained him will also sustain me. I could not imagine a more loving father and feel blessed to be a recipient of his love and guidance for my whole life. My Dad was a very intelligent man, but his humility, sincerity, and sense of integrity are even more striking. I will remember my Dad's sense of humor and his smile that uncovered the sunshine on any gray day. He was full of energy, adventure, and life. I know his spirit will go with me wherever I go. Here's a hug for you Dad...we know you are watching over us! Thank you God for giving me such a special Father:)

I met John a little more than a week before his death. His interest in others, his warmth, and caring for his family were striking. He also glowed when he spoke of his fishing trip earlier this year. His son is marrying my daughter and I wish I could have known him better and longer.
