I was very sad to learn today that Joe passed away. I worked with Joe at LMI for many years. I was even one of the guys that interviewed Joe for the job. One of the best hires we ever made. We worked well together. I was happy when Joe was promoted and tried to stay in touch off and on after I left LMI. I will miss him.

I remember standing at the counter at 1088 and laughing and laughing with you. You sure had a fantastic sense of Humor. I looked forward to many more times like that. We have had a lot of snow to shovel this winter and I have asked for your help in shoveling many times. Thanks you. Life was just cut to short. I love you, Jaren

Heartfelt condolences to Terri Zurlo and all of Jay's family regarding his recent passing. Was a member of Jay's H.S. graduating class @ West Chester Henderson in 1977. "Jay," as we called him back then, was one of the leaders of our class. I didn't know him as well as some of our peers, but I remember his stellar athleticism, intelligence, quick wit, and generally amiable personality. Will keep all of the Zurlo family in prayer during the coming weeks. The religious conviction here is that our mortal lives are but a small fraction of our eternal living. Jay lived well in his mortal days. I've no doubt he'll live as passionately in his eternal existence.

I first met Joe when he interviewed at LMI in 1990. John Olio asked Tom Kelly and me to take him out to lunch. This was the beginning of a 24 year journey. Since Joe and I worked together on the same projects at LMI and the USMC Reserves, and shared similar interests in raising children, working out, politics, business, sports, philosophy, and Christianity, I believe I spent as much time with him as with my own family.
We frequently traveled together for both LMI and the USMC, engaging in extreme adventures along the way. In Washington State, for example, we climbed Mt. Ranier wearing hotel towels for scarves and socks for gloves. We passed a serious bunch of hikers, clad in the most sophisticated climbiing gear, who asked us for the names and addresses of our next of kin. Undaunted, we rushed on until about 7,000 feet when Joe, wearing his running shoes, almost fell down the side of the mountain. At that point, we headed back down the mountain, again passing the serious hikers who had made little headway.
In Hawaii, Joe and I scuba dove into the ocean. I was newly certified, and Joe had not dived since his days at the Naval Academy. So we found a dive master who reluctantly signed us on. On the first dive, I launched into the deep so mesmerized by the beauty of my surroundings that I wandered away from the group, until I was commanded by the dive master to get out of the water and sit out the rest of that dive in the boat. Joe used to joke that I was the only guy he knew to be evicted from the Pacific Ocean. On the next dive, we were told that sharks had been spotted nearby, and we should be careful. Joe took the warning to heart and persuaded me, much to my chagrin, to hang out with him in a small cave for protection. So there we waited until we were hailed to return to the boat.
With so much idle time together, we had endless opportunities to talk about our deepest thoughts and emotions. Joe has a penetrating intellectual curiosity about almost everything. In the mid nineties, after recognizing Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour of Creation, Joe pumped me constantly about my faith. I answered all his questions, but did not sense that he was truly buying it. It became a sort of battle of the wits for us until I left LMI in 2005. Joe and I continued to meet sporadically to catch up on each other's lives. Frequently, we found ourselves plotting how we might once again merge our now separate paths. This continued until his untimely death.
For me, the story does not end with his death, for a couple of years ago, Joe had confided, with great excitement and pleasure, that he too had come to recognize Christ as Lord and Saviour. So, while the temporal journey with Joe has ended, the eternal journey has just begun.

For the last decade plus, I had the great pleasure of working out with Joe in the morning(s) at the LMI gym. His presence would light-up the room - the banter would circle around the seasonal sporting events, especially MLB; training for a race or the results following a race; or, his real passion, discussions about his Family or the State of the Union, in that order. Save me a locker - I miss you already, My Brother.

I often think about how you measure the value of one's life on this earth. If it is measured by the way you projected God's love for you toward all of those people you met along your journey; by how you influenced people in a positive way and by the fond memories you leave behind embedded in the hearts of the living - then by all counts Joe's life was extraordinary. I know that he enriched my life and that he will always live on in my heart.
I had the great pleasure of meeting Joe at LMI in 2005. We saw each other daily - every morning in the gym. Over these last 8 plus years I learned a great deal about Joe and from Joe. I learned that he was a devoted family man. He treasured his wife and daughters, had an extremely close relationship with his brother, helped care for his grandmother and more recently for his mom. We shared the love for baseball, cooking and travel. We played hooky a couple of times and traveled to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia to watch our favorite teams. We constantly exchanged text messages and pictures of our latest cooking adventures (he made a mean short-rib and tenderloin) and I always looked forward to hearing about his latest travels which were always adventurous whether he was diving for sharks or watching the plane take off from Dulles for a family vacation in Mexico with his wife and daughters on-board having missed it due to a poorly planned trip to the bathroom!
Joe was one of the smartest people I ever knew and a man of many interests. He could talk in detail about anything - chemical formulas, economics, world politics, batting averages or raising figs in his back yard. I often had to remind him to use smaller words since I was a kid from a small town in western PA. But Joe was humble - he never flaunted his intelligence - always made you feel comfortable and respected. Joe was bigger than life. He would lighten up each room he walked into with his big bright smile, his engaging eye contact, his firm handshake and his genuine interest in what you had to say.
While Joe was often the center of attention because of his position at work; because people respected his leadership qualities, intelligence and advice; and/or because he was so easy to approach - Joe loved his alone time. Joe had an insoluble appetite for knowledge and read more books in a month than I have read in a lifetime. He was often most happy left alone to get lost in a good book. The one book I know that he read and studied was the Bible and I am certain that Joe is at peace with God.
Yes - Joe enriched my life and I will miss him dearly. But knowing Joe and how he lived his life to the fullest and about his belief in God, I think that he would have reflected on the end of his life using the words written by Paul McCartney. Sir Paul wrote: "At the end of the end it's the start of a journey to a much better place, and this wasn't bad, so a much better place would have to be special - no need to be sad, no reason to cry." Joe - you will live forever in my heart.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in this time of sorrow. I was one of Joe’s classmates at the Academy. I did not know him well. I frankly don’t think I have seen him since we graduated almost 33 years ago. And I think we exchanged exactly one message in all those years. But I can tell you that to this day I consider him a friend. He was just that kind of guy. I do want to pass on a fuzzy memory of a wild ride through the Pennsylvania countryside…in December…in a convertible…one Army-Navy weekend. A memorable event! Joe and I were classmates in 4th company, U.S. Naval Academy. He was a rare blend of good athlete and nice guy. He put on no airs. We decided to join the Sport Parachute Club and make a parachute jump together (out of a helicopter). I remember him telling me that he had spoken to his father on the phone about the jump and his Dad had encouraged him to be sure there were no sins on his conscience. I could sense the respect he had for his father as he related the call, and his father's love for him to say what he did. After we made the jump (the winds had kicked up and we both landed in tall trees) he told me he had been nervous waiting in the door of the helo, but took courage in seeing how calm I looked. I appreciated the humility it took to admit that. Little did he know, it was I who took courage from him. What a great guy! We've lost a great man.

My condolences to Joe's family - here is a story from Joe's early years that you may not have heard. Long ago memories I have are from the 1970's of Joe playing soccer during high school and our poker group. We would play poker on Friday or Saturday nights with each of us taking a turn to set up a table in our basements. Imagine five or six teenagers playing cards with a pile of nickels and dimes in front of each and then add alot of laughing and joking and a few bluffs now and then. Win or lose we had fun.
