William R. Marcotte, Sr. (Bill), beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away quietly on February 5, 2014. He lived a long and vibrant life, serving in the Navy in World War II, graduating from Villanova, and joining DuPont as an electrical engineer at the first nylon plant in Seaford, Delaware. He advanced into management and transferred to Wilmington, Delaware, then Waynesboro, Virginia, where he retired. Bill married Sarah Theresa Love (Sally), a dental hygienist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with whom he raised six children, but by whom he unfortunately was widowed in 2004. He is survived by an elder brother, retired USAF LT Col. John C. Marcotte (Ginny), four children: Sara Might of Reston, Virginia; William R. Marcotte, Jr. (Molly) of Pendleton, South Carolina; Dixie Stanforth, (Phil) of Austin, Texas, and Joseph Marcotte (Julie) of Wahiawa, Hawaii. Two sons preceded him in death: Alexander Marcotte of Lake Jackson, Texas and James R. Marcotte of New Jersey. Bill has nine grandchildren and eight grandchildren. Finally, he is survived by his granddog and soulmate, Merlin. Bill had widely varied interests throughout his life. These included, but were not limited to, caddying golf, singing barbershop and symphonic, playing the trumpet, acting in musicals, dancing, camping, travelling, home remodeling, flower and vegetable gardening, crop farming and animal husbandry, reading, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, The Young and the Restless, and playing all kinds of cards. A Renaissance man. He and Sally also loved entertaining houseguests frequently in their home in the Shenandoah Valley. Bill had Catholic schooling throughout his education; he was always active in his local parish, as a gardener, catechist, council member, Eucharistic minister, and was a Knight of Columbus, among other roles. Civically, he participated in Kiwanis and was President of his local Ruritan club for a time after he retired. He had an intense work ethic, giving his all in anything he did. Like many Irish, Bill had a wonderful sense of humor. Often asked how he was feeling over the course of his extended illnesses, he usually replied, "with both hands."
