Hard to believe, as I was searching the internet for my godmother, who I had lost touch with nearly 30 years ago - I find her death notice. Just 6 weeks after her passing! Erika was a very close friend of my mother Erika Huelster (died1976). After finishing High School I visited my grandmother in Boulder/Colorado and then I took the greyhound bus to Washington DC to meet my godmother Erika Troske. She was so happy to have her first visitor from Germany in 1981. She took time off and showed me Philadephia, Baltimore and some historic places in VA. The highlight was the Open Air Concert, featuring Harry Belafonte, one of my favourite singers at the time.
I saw aunt Erika one more time in 1982/83 in Germany and we drove from Munich to Hannover, with a coffee break in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Then we lost touch - my life changed directions.
I was sad to hear, that her brother and niece passed away so early, as Susan would have only been a few years older than myself. RIP dear Erika, I will always have fond memories of our time in Reston, 33 years ago.

I had the distinct privilege of being Erika's pastor at Christ the Servant Church from 1986-1992, and we have been fast long-distance friends since. She was my best preaching professor ever: I will never forget one Sunday morning when she took me aside after church and told how good that day's sermon was, and how much she enjoyed my engaging preaching style, but then she added that my sermons would be even better if... "when you're done, you should stop talking"! Ahem! Well, my sermons for the past 25 years have been more concise and better, thanks to that. She was so proud of sending me and my little family off to our next pastoral call in Frankfurt, Germany, and there has been no dearer German in my life, ever. "Auf Wiedersehen, lieber Erika!"

ET -- You were stubborn, bossy, a true German, and one of the most giving, wonderful and lovable friends we ever had! Rest in peace, our dear little Buttercup from the Reston Chorale.
