Walter B. Burroughs, Sr. posted a condolence
Saturday, April 5, 2014
My heartfelt condolence to the entire Rickmers family at the loss of their husband, father and grandfather. The graphic arts and printing industry has lost a master craftsman in statistical quality control as it applies to print quality on a press sheet. Having taken a one week class at RIH in the 1970's, while working in the printing quality control section of the US Govt Printing Office, I appreciated his instruction and knowledge of the work that I was doing in private printing plants throughout the USA. After taking his class, I enrolled in the local community college for additional into regarding statistical quality control. I have never forgotten Dr. Rickmers name or the impression he made upon me over the past 30 years. I wish that I could have taken this class as well as others a lot earlier in my career as it would have made a difference in how I approached my work. Yours in craftsmanship, Walter B. Burroughs, Sr., Burroughs Printing Consultant

I was an electrical engineer at Kodak in Rochester. At the time, I was struggling with trying to figure out which of two design options was the best. I was "forced" to go to a class hosted by Prof. Rickmers and I spent most of the time thinking about my problem. He was introducing the concept of Designed Experiments, and his engaging methods got through to me. He presented just exactly what I was looking for. I came out of there fired up and wanting to learn more about these types of experiments. Long story short, I ended up going back to school to get my Masters in Math & Applied Statistics and spent the rest of my career at Kodak doing what Al Rickmers taught us. He radically altered the direction I was heading in, and I just wanted to say thank you, Prof. Rickmers. You were a special kind of person.

rented a room from Al Rickmers while he was in Ellicottville NY. I found this out when I mentioned to my mother (Dora Dahlke) that I had a Professor Rickmers at RIT. I am grateful for the knowledge Al was able to pass on to me.

My father, Milton Pearson (RIT Graphic Arts Research Center retiree) always spoke highly of his friend Al Rickmers. My mother recalls that he always made whoever he was talking to feel like they were the most important person in the room. Our condolences to the family.
