I should have done this a year ago, but I was still in shock. Dan wasn't going to die. He was eternal, a force of nature. But then he was gone, reminding all of us why and how much we'd miss him. When some people enter a room, you know exactly what's coming: boredom, a whine, a confrontation...or, if you're really lucky, a laugh. Everybody knew when Dan walked in a room that there was about to be a laugh. Usually 3 or 4. I always tried to summon up my best responses, not to compete with Dan (a fool's errand), but just to pay him back a little for lighting up my life. It was particularly great to see Dan after he started working on Capitol Hill because (1) you hadn't seen him in awhile, and (2) he brought such wonderful stories about people we all hear about. Propriety prevents me from telling you one particular joke Senator Alan Simpson told Senator Ted Kennedy. Suffice it to say I retain 2 regrets. First, that Dan never wrote the book I bugged him to write. And second, Dan won't be around to speak at my funeral.

I first got to know Dan through his reporting on the Mutual Radio Network. When I first got into broadcasting I worked for a couple of stations that were Mutual affiliates. Dan's voice and reporting stood out. Years later I was an editor and producer at Mutual. While Dan spent most of his time on the Hill, he did stop in at headquarters in Crystal City. He always had a story or two, told with a quick and sly wit.
I remember one time Dan asked me to lunch at the capital. I was touched that he took time out of a busy day to have meal and show me around a bit.
In the late 90's when Mutual shut down I became a weekend producer at WTOP. Dan began commuting to New York for network casts.
Dan listened to WTOP on his drive and many times if he heard me mentioned on the air he'd call on his cell and we'd talk about the news and catch up.
Dan noticed the behind the scene folks. We were friends and colleagues.
He was a gentleman and a journalist's journalist.

Like everyone else, I was shocked and saddened to hear about Dan's passing. He was the kind of guy you expected to always be around -- mainly because the world was a better place with him in it. We worked together a couple of decades ago as part of the "morning anchor team" at Mutual. That was a truly wonderful time. He was such a good writer (you just knew he was Irish), an excellent broadcaster, a dogged journalist, an inspiring co-worker, a delightful storyteller and always a friend. He was devoted to his family, had a great sense of humor and was one of the most honorable men I knew. I will miss him.

Dan Scanlan was one of the original crew of AP Radio, which went on the air 40 years ago this October. "Original" is an apt description for Dan, though when I arrived a year and a half later, he was an institution.
My lasting memory of Dan is at AP Radio where I followed him on the weekday anchor desk. When I would arrive in the afternoon Dan was always holding court, with people standing around the desk as he told stories or provided running editorial commentary on the news of the day. While most anchors withdrew into their own cocoon while preparing a newscast, Dan engaged anyone who happened within earshot of the anchor desk. Visitors to the AP Radio newsroom were invariably drawn into a conversation with Dan, who was always interested in who they were, where they were from and what they were doing.
Then, a couple of minutes before the top of the hour, Dan would bang out a couple of lines of copy, make a note or two, grab a couple of audio soundbite carts and make a mad dash for the on-air studio, often to the recorded strains of the William Tell Overture. When the light came on, he was on, delivering a five minute newscast that sounded for all the world like it had received his full attention for the allotted 55 minutes he was given to prepare it.
Off the air I was lucky enough to be his friend. Our families did things together - at least one New Years Eve that I recall. We also cut firewood with our matching white Toyota pick-up trucks. When our daughter was a baby we left her overnight for the first time with Dan and Pat. Tells you all you need to know.
It was my honor to have worked with a talent like Dan Scanlan. It was my greater blessing to have known him.

Dearest Pat, Danny, Maureen, Kathleen and children, Words fail me to express to you how saddened I am to know that Dan has left you...and all of us in this world who loved him. Pat: how many laughs did we share over the years because Dan was The Master Story Teller? How many times did we wait for the punchline because Dan himself was laughing so hard over what he was about to tell us? And how many nights did you and I listen to "Mike Melody" on the radio in our dorm room, as Dan played a special song for you? Wonderful memories flood my mind: the day we met at Nazareth, the fun we had, meeting our lifelong mates, graduation and parting for our own new worlds, our weddings, our children, Bethany Beach, college reunions, you, Dan, Jim and I visiting Ireland together... Danny, Maureen, and Kathleen: it has been your good fortune to have had Dan as your dad. He was one special guy! Cherish your memories forever! May God give all of you comfort and strength in this time of sorrow. And may God hold Dan in the palm of his hand this day. You are in my thoughts prayers. "THAT'S All"! Love, Sharon

Pat - Dan was many things to many people but there was no one in this world that he loved more than you. His eyes sparkled whenever he spoke of you. He made sure every year to get you the biggest box of chocolates for Valentine's Day. It's been years since I worked in the Radio-TV gallery with Dan and too long since I have seen him. If he was ever having a bad day you would not know it. He was quick with a smile and a good story from his early radio days. He was a great teacher and a class act. My favorite memory of Dan was when, as chairman of the House Radio-TV correspondents association, he would be MC'ing our annual dinner. It was 1989 and GHW Bush decided to skip the dinner and send Dan Quayle in his place. Ten days before the big night I came down with a raging case of chicken pox and it seemed impossible that I would make it to my first dinner at the head table. Dan called to say the Secret Service needed to confirm the seating arrangements. Was I going to be there? With clearance from my doctor and lots of powder to mask the scars, I went. Thanks to Dan I was seated next to the VPOTUS. Me! A rookie reporter! A dinner napkin's distance away from possibly infecting the man just a heartbeat away from the presidency. Could my doctor have been wrong? Dan sensed my fear and Quayle's general unease and cracked some jokes to lighten the mood. The "on air" light has gone off for another great colleague and I am sad for his passing. Too many have left the booth in the past year. To Dan, to Skip, to Brenda Box - may God bless you all. To Pat and the entire Scanlan family - may Dan's memory be everlasting. Va.

I was only priviledged to know Dan for a few short months after I started attending the daily 0900 mass at St John Neumann. Dan eagerly and graciously embraced me and accepted me into his circle of SJN 50+ club friends. A fellow veteran, once he found out that my father-in-law, brother-in-law and I were in the USAF and worked on B-52s, he beamed with pride talking about his granddaughter currently serving and showing me her picture. I thrilled to introduce Dan and the 50+ Club to my in-laws just last Friday after the 0900 mass and Pro Life rosary. My in-laws remarked to my wife and me later how much they enjoyed that visit. I'm saddened to miss my new friend Dan after such a short time together - I was looking forward to hearing more about his life and career. That will have to wait until we meet each other again. Vivat Jesu!

My condolences and prayers for Dan's family. I had the good fortune to work with Dan for a time at AP Broadcast. He was clearly one of the best broadcast journalists around with terrific talent, drive and knowledge. The industry would be served well if it could find more professionals like Dan, but he was the rare top-notch pro. So, it will not.

Pat, When I hung up the phone last Saturday after talking with you about Dan, I told his co-workers at NBC Radio the news you had just given me. There was one minute of disbelief and "Oh no." Then the smiles came followed by The Stories beginning with "Remember when Dan...." or "He told this joke...". Dan was a teacher. Every hour he taught the listeners the latest news and in between he taught all of us. That moment after your phone call taught me about a life well-lived. He's still teaching us. Pat Piper

Pat and family, Joe and I are so sorry to hear of Dan's passing. Dan was among the kindest people I ever worked with. He was a dear friend who stuck by me during some difficult times in broadcasting and I'll never forget that. What's remarkable is that everyone who met Dan probably considered him to be a "dear friend." He was that sort of rare person. Besides his tremendous talent, Dan was also very funny and could lighten a mood with one of his stories or just his great smile. And boy, did he love you, Pat! He talked about you constantly in such a sweet way that before meeting you, we all thought you would be a combination of a supermodel and Indira Gandhi. And of course, you are! What we all noticed when we DID make your acquaintance, was that you and Dan practically finished each other's sentences and that YOU, Pat, are a delight to be with too. Your great love for each other was obvious. Pat, I regret that Joe and I cannot attend the services as we now live several hours away. But please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and I'm just so very sorry for your tremendous loss.

Dear Pat and all of Dan's girls, I loved Dan Scanlan. That's what I always told my husband when I learned that Dan was hosting First Light for Dirk Van, or, filling in for Jim Bohannon on American This Week. Actually, when I learned that he was hired to do some newscast work for NBC News Radio and for the other long form programs, I said to Chuck, my husband, it's about f#$#ng time, because it was so obvious to get Dan back on the air again. You see, for a handful of years I was one of the tape editors for Mutual/NBC. Dan was one of those voices that they just make anymore. I'd have to lower the audio level of his feeds, after taking in a story from another reporter, because Dan's sound level was so darn strong. And, when I met him in person, when he wasn't on the Hill, he was a doll. I was charmed by that man. I always had a thing for Irish guys, but Dan, oh, Dan--I loved. And, I think he was rather fond of me--partly because of my New Yorkish charm, and partly because I actually went to college in Buffalo, New York. I liked going to Buff State, and I enjoyed the city. Really, I did. So, when you all moved to western New York I felt an added bond to Dan. The only problem is that we wouldn't be working for the same radio outlet anymore. But, he came back. And, my heart was happier because Dan was a nice guy. I was so tickled to hear him laughing at my glib remarks at the start of the Mutual/NBC Radio Reunion. Dan was a great audience. I loved that man and I'm heart broken that I won't be able to yell into Chuck's mic in his home studio, "I love Dan Scanlan!" when Chuck has to record a segment for whomever is filling in for Dirk or Jim. Maybe I'll yell it anyway. With deepest condolences, and love, Rita
