I was so saddened to hear the passing of Ms. Olsen. I was always amazed about her positivity--never a negative word to say about anybody and always supportive and encouraging. Even things outside of Fairfax Station swimming, she always had a beat on what was happening with each and every child throughout the year....other sports, academics, milestones. I can't count how many times we ate pasta, posters, etc. over at her house.
To me, what spoke volumes about Ms. Olsen was the widespread respect she had throughout the NVSL. Offering up countless hours (along with Chrissy, obviously) to make sure meets were held, weather delays handled, parties/awards arranged, trips to Kings Dominion (I think I still have the map at home how to navigate the park maximizing fun whle minimizing waiting time) was unbelieveable. I could go on and on.
I don't know if I have one particular moment of Ms. Olsen that sticks out in my mind....each and everyday was a tribute of how a person should be--selfless, giving to others, and genuine. We lost a friend, family member and mentor. However, let's remember the great memories and celebrate what a super person Ms. Olsen was!!

Similar to many who knew her, we met Joan through the swim team, the very first season of the Fairfax Station Flyers. We were impressed that first year that Joan seemed to know every child and every family and had an uncommon ability to make each child feel special. We had no way of knowing at that time that we were witnessing what we would later realize was Joan's amazing ability to make each child and each child's family feel special every year for the hundreds of children who wore the Flyers' blue. Joan never forgot birthdays, non-swimmer family members' interests, and whatever else she could to make that family feel like part of her family. In reality, that was what made the Flyers' team so special. Long after our swim team involvement was past, Bob began receiving unsigned birthday cards for his 50th birthday, each postmarked from a different state and a city that had significance to him. Only after the last card had been received did Joan stop by to ask if we had received any unusual mail recently, her typically subtly humorous way of revealing her role. We spoke to Joan many times throughout the years, and she never failed to ask about our children and grandchildren, and she delighted in telling us about hers, too. Consistent to the end, a week before she died, she called to check on Bob's recovery from recent surgery and sounded happy and optimistic. Lauren has never forgotten all Joan and Chrissie did for her during her 10 years as a Flyer and the example they set for leaders of children. She has recently joined a neighborhood pool and is hoping to find a swim team for her children to give them a similar experience, but she knows that is not likely - there was only one Joan Olson, and we were privileged to have known her.

An Angel on Earth - We all had the pleasure of getting to know Joan over the past few years. She was so caring and loving, so many angelic qualities she possessed... A true Christian woman in every sense - A role model for me. My kids really enjoyed her so... Knowing my mom passed, she was very engaged with my children's lives and activities as well as conversations. She attended my children's grad parties and dance recitals... And never forgetting a single birthday. She was an amazing human being, always serving others in caring, giving, and loving ways. We love you Joan, and we know you will be watching over all of us.
J is for a "joy to be around." O is for a "one and only" women show - A giving, loving, human spirit. A is for the "Angelic qualities" she possesses. N is for her "never" ending love and Nurturing love. We thank you for all your beautiful gifts and love that you gave us. Xox.

I'm not sure where to began... Mrs. Olson has been part of my entire life, especially my swimming life. From the beginning of my swim career on Fairfax Station, until the end in college, she was sending me encouragement. I loved receiving her love in cards for every birthday or other achievement like graduation. I know that I was not the only one she sent her love and encouragement too. Anyone that would cross her path, she would pay attention too.
I am grateful that I could take part in coaching her grandchildren on Sideburn Run as she watched them grow as well. They were lucky to have such a caring and supportive person in their lives, we all have been lucky. Any NVSL all-star meet I went to as a swimmer or coach, I would always look forward to get to talk to her and see her. Knowing that she would always be there was part of the excitement for me. Mrs. Olson was someone that touched your heart every time you interacted with her. She embodied what the NVSL should be and I learned so much of that from her. The way I wanted to be in the water as a swimmer and the way I want to be as a coach, I think of her. Sportsmanship was something she always kept in mind. Every swimmer is a person, and swimming is a life skill. We can be more than just a coach teaching a kid how to swim. We can help them navigate through their life for however long we may be part of it. She kept in touch even when she wouldn't see me all the time. People come in and out of our lives, and Mrs. Olson always wanted to stay in the lives of those she met. This is no secret to anyone that knew her, we can all agree she is a special soul.
Mrs. Olson was always there watching and helping all of us succeed. She will remain at our sides and in our hearts for the years to come. This summer in NVSL will be different for me, but every meet I will remember her. I know I am not the only one that wants to dedicate this summer to Mrs. Olson and all she stood for.
Your soul will not be any star in the sky, it will be the sun. The sun that keeps us warm during the day and illuminates the moon at night. <3 Lauren Kranz

We met Joan when we were team reps in the NVSL over a decade ago as it seemd to be her passion to get to know and encourage new team reps. Over the years, we came to know Joan as a warm, caring, loving person who enjoyed getting to know swimmers, their families, and loved all that she did for the NVSL. Through the years, Joan would check up on us from time to time with a phone call - long after our team rep days were over - wanting to know how all our boys were doing. We will always remember Joan with loving fondness and will miss her much. Our deep felt sympathy and loving prayers to all of Joan's loved ones. Mary and Dave Allen

When we moved to Virginia 15 years ago I was lucky to find the Fairfax Station pool and Joan Olson. My children were young and we knew nothing about swimming or swim team. Joan took us under her care. She told me to go to the mom/tot luncheon and introduced me to others who still remain my friends. Most importantly, she made my kids feel special. I looked forward to my many converstions with Mrs. Olson which covered more than just swimming and often ended with her saying, "It was so great catching up with you." I have thought of her so often over the years and told her what an impact Chrissie had on our family but she too was an inspiration and will always be in our thoughts. I am so grateful to have met Mrs. Olson and to have been a part of the Flyers. Wendy Ferrell

Mrs. Olson was someone that I could always count on to be there year after year, whether it was sitting by the pool watching me swim as a kid, always offering encouragement and warm thoughts, or sending me cards and gifts throughout the year. She never missed an opportunity to send me a card for a birthday or holiday. She even sent my son a birthday card from the hospital this past winter. It is evident that she was always thinking of others even though she was busy keeping up with her family and grandkids, or even as she was sick in the hospital.
She spent countless hours watching hundreds of swimmers over the years. Her mind was like a rolodex- she knew our birthdays, our times, our history. She always took the time congratulate us and give meaningful encouragement. She didn't just say, "good job," she offered specifics about the race so that you knew she really paid attention. On one occasion, after one of my races, she showed me a note that Chrissie passed to her about my race because I had cut off a couple seconds. What a thoughtful way to make a 10 year-old feel incredible knowing that they were both so genuinely excited for me. I will never forget that amazing moment. Chrissie and Mrs. Olson always had a way of making a kid feel like a superstar.
Mrs. Olson was tremendously proud of the Flyer kids. Each time we got together over the years, she would share updates on who was doing what. It genuinely tickled her to see us succeed. I'm not sure that she realized that she deserved to take a piece of the credit for these accomplishments. I bet a lot of former Flyers would agree that they would not achieve as much as they do if they had never been a part of the amazing program that Chrissie and Mrs. Olson provided every summer. For me, swimming for the Flyers as a kid gave me an identity, a work ethic, pride, and self-esteem, in addition to some great friends, that I would not have had otherwise. I can say with 100% certainty that I would not have achieved as much as I have had I not been a part of the Flyers swim team. I hope that, on some level, Mrs. Olson realized the influence that she and Chrissie had on all of us growing up.
She was loved and appreciated by countless swimmers and families over the years. It is difficult to measure the impact she left on all of us through her leadership, hard work, encouragement, and support. But, it certainly extends far outside the pool and long beyond the years that we spent as swimmers. I will truly miss having her in my life. And, I am so thankful for crossing her path.

Few people truly know how much time and effort Joan Olson put into organizing and promoting the Fairfax Station Swim Team. Her behind the scenes work went unnoticed by many and yet she was the first to praise all others. She was our team's biggest fan. She was the first person to arrive at the pool and after every swim meet she was one of the last people to leave. It was a pleasure and honor to work with Joan and Chrissie while my children were on the team. The Fairfax Station Swim Team that Joan Olson started and lovingly supported became our family tradition in the summer. Putting all vacations off until August and driving kids to 7:00am practices was all worth it. Those years were a product of Joan's vision. Thank YOU Mrs. Olson for giving us the opportunity to come together and create lifetime friendships and memories of all the summers we "lived" at the pool. We will always have a connection and bond with other Fairfax Station Swim Team Members becasue of your spirit of giving and dedication. All who were lucky to be a part of the team knew that they belonged to something special.

In summer of 1990 we had just moved from Southern California to Fairfax Station, and our neighbors immediately told us it was a necessity to join the Flyers. So my parents signed up my 11-year old brother, Bobby. Since I was only 6, they started me on the mini team. After my first 25 meter freestyle race at the Lollipop meet, it was Mrs. Olson that ran to my mother & me and said, "You've got to get her on the 8&under team!!" It was Mrs. Olson, who, at that moment, made the next eight summers of my childhood unforgettably perfect. Because of their love for the swimmers and their dedication to the sport, Mrs. Olson and Chrissie ran a program in Fairfax Station that cannot be duplicated. The Flyers from the 1990's are so lucky - we all have a unique bond with each other (A bond that lasts. I know this, as 2 of my bridesmaids were FS Flyers). Maybe that bond stems from the countless cheers like, "F-F-FLY-E-E-ERS..." that we will forever have memorized, maybe it's because of the lip sync contests, maybe it's because of the white and blue streamers for the caravans or the white and blue nail polish painting parties. As the years passed, I look back on those summers and realize our special bond and childhood memories were made possible because of Mrs. Olson and her collective passion for our team, our success, and us as individuals. Although I moved to Michigan after the 1998 summer season, I would often return, and Mrs. Olson would welcome me back with a warm smile and open arms and treat me like I had never left. She always had a way of making me feel special, and a permanent member of the team I always wanted to be on. I will always remember Mrs. Olson, in her white Fairfax Station polo, cheering at the side of the pool. Her encouragement and kindness towards me is something I will carry with me forever.

Is there anyone who was a part of the extraordinary Flyer family, who when they think of Fairfax Station Swim Club, does not think of Joan Olson? She was indeed the backbone of a swim team that was one of the most memorable periods of our four sons' lives. She worked tirelessly for the team out of a deep love for the children who swam there. There was not a race or a time that she had not committed to her memory, and happily share years later, when you were lucky enough to run into her and reminisce about the good old days. She loved all the children that walked through the doors of Fairfax Station. She knew their strengths, and she may have known their weaknesses as well, but she never focused on those. Her words to the kids were always encouraging, praising, loving and kind. She was so proud of the team and as we advanced up the ranks to a #1 spot in Division 1 she could not have been more excited. My favorite memory of Joan was always after the end of the summer slide shows (which she never got to see "live" because she was always at the seeding meeting) and she would run breathlessly onto the grass, grab the mike from Chrissie and proudly announce the All Star swimmers for that season. She always accompanied those announcements with stats from the other teams, and could not have been more delighted that we usually led the league in the number of swimmers making the cuts. We were so lucky to have her knowledge, her enthusiasm and her unconditional love for a sport that had been so important when she was raising her own children. Joan played her love for the sport forward, and we were all so lucky to have been the recipients of that.
Of course, in addition to her love for swimming and the Fairfax Station Flyers was her devotion to her family. Chrissie and Joan had a unique and special relationship, built on respect and love for each other. An extraordinary person, a loving mother, a devoted grandmother and a loyal friend, we will miss you Joan and thank you so much for the family you created in the Fairfax Station Flyers!!! xo

Mrs. Olson was a cornerstone of the Fairfax Station community for decades. Despite the fact that held many important positions, I was always impressed by her humility and compassion. Although she loved to talk swimming, she made it a point to talk with me about life outside of swimming. Every summer, she wanted to know about my favorite subject in school, about my older siblings (who weren't even swimmers), or to where I intended to apply to college. Furthermore, she remembered the details between our punctuated conversations!
I do remember that the summer when I was eight years old was particularly cold in Fairfax Station (read: blue lips and teeth chattering). Chrissie was doing her best to get in as much practice time before the first meet. I remember huddling together at the wall with the other little girls between sets to keep warm. When Chrissie was coaching alongside the pool with her back to the wall, Mrs. Olson began plucking us out one or two at a time and bring us into the girls' room for a warm shower and then redeposit us. I don't know if Chrissie realized that this was happening, but for years after, several of us talked about this as one of our favorite memories of Mrs. Olson. (And if Chrissie did know this was happening, it speaks to the seamless interplay and invisible choreography that those two always seemed to have.)
Mrs. Olson was a marvelous lady who touched more people than she will ever know. We are all blessed for having known her.

Joan Olson was truely a fixture in mine and countless other Flyers' childhoods and her contributions to the growth and development of so many cannot be overstated. Her ability to make each of us feel special was amazing, whether it was by giving a hug or a simple comment after a race like, "that was fast." I still think fondly of her announcing the All-Star seeds and the excitement in her voice. She was a motivator, kind, and genuine. I would be much lighter today in values like teamwork, leadership, and perseverance if it were not for the progam Joan and Chrissie created each summer at a neighborhood swimming pool. She touched so many of us and will be missed.

Joan and I met when our husbands were at MIT together. We had our children about the same time. We stayed in touch for a long time and recently reconnected. Memories would include a strong faith, a deep love of family, a passion for the NVSL and a love for this country. She was so proud of the swimmers in the NVSL and shared so many stories of their accomplishments. She took pride in her role as seeding chairman and worked tirelessly to assure the seeding was fair. She had a great knowledge of the Bible and would often recite a Bible verse applicable to what we were discussing. We were both very patriotic and shared our joy of being Americans. Most of all I will remember her love of family. She adored being a Mom to Chrissie and David and was so proud of the people they have become. She shared many stories of her grandchildren. I felt as though I knew them through her descriptions. I loved her and will miss her but I have comfort that she is in a better place, free from pain and suffering. The legacy that Mrs. Olson leaves behind is one marked by positive life change in literally thousands of young lives. I will never forget how much Mrs. Olson believed in me, more than I ever believed in myself. It's amazing to look back now and realize Mrs. Olson's impact on my life. I'm literally in the business of encouraging people, it's what God created me to do, but I would not be where I am today if it were not for her unconditional love, constant encouragement, and dedication to investing in creating a remarkable experience for every Fairfax Station Flyer. Mrs. Olson planted seeds in my heart that would come to fruition years later. I imagine the same thing has been felt by many others. I had a fairly successful swimming career as a young kid. When I aged-up to the 15-18 age group, I was devasted and broken, as I could no longer compete at the highest level and add value to the Flyer wins. For the first time in my young athletic career I watched from the sidelines as a cheer leader. It was especially painful when we beat Overlee for the first time, and I couldn't participate in the pool. But Mrs. Olson, in the midst of it all, pursued me with love and found a way to encourage me by recongizing my commitment as a raving cheer leader in our pursuit of the division championship that year. While everyone deserved an honor for that incredible season, what Mrs Olson did for me was show me that I am valuable and everyone has value no matter what circumstance they are in. That life lesson stays with me today and I will carry it forward for the rest of my life and into my own family.
Mrs Olson, I love you, and thank you for blessing me and my family with so much growth, joy and fond memories.

I had heard about the winning Fairfax Station swim team through our realtor in 1989 when we moved to the neighborhood. At that time, we had never been part of a swim team. But Joan's warm and welcoming phone call assured me that there would be a place for my children, even as beginners. She really made me and my family feel so comfortable; in fact, we felt so comfortable that we could never leave - and we're still here! She treated all the swimmers like they were her godchildren. She extended that warmth when we hosted swim meets at our pool - always greeting every parent of the opposing team as each walked through the gate. She definitely made a positive difference in our lives, and those memories will never be foregotten. Additionally, she always asked me about my other 3 children, even though they were not involved in swimming. She was an amazing, sharp and caring person, and she has passed those traits along to Chrissie. Chrissie, please be assured that your mom will be in the thoughts and prayers of myself, John, and all 5 of our children. Blessings to you and your family.

My family and I have known Joan for the past 30 years through the NVSL and were so sorry to hear about her passing. I can remember from a very young age Joan and my father who was also a volunteer hanging out joking and laughing together at meets in the 80's and 90's. Joan was always genuinely happy to see us, was the first to congratulate me on my swims and awarded me my first All Star medal. After my NVSL swimming career ended I began coaching and continued to see Joan at All-Star Relays and All-Stars. She was always quick to say hello, ask about my family and tell me she was so glad to catch up. Over the past few years I have run into Joan at Hunter Mill meets where she was proudly watching her grandchildren swim. The joy and pride she had for each of them was immense and she clearly relished cheering them on. Always thoughtful and friendly I will truly miss seeing her on deck this season. I got to know Joan at the seeding meetings. Our swim club had a tough year the prior season, and Joan made sure to let us know that they work very hard to try to find the right division for all teams. I've always felt she really cared about all the teams, regardless of who they are or where they fall in the division ranks. We are a middle-of-the-pack team, and I know Joan felt we were just as important as a top division team.
Shortly after I first met Joan, she commented to me about how impressed she was that my 9 year old swam the 100 fly at a winter meet. He's not a summer all-star, nor is he a winter superstar, but she recognized his name and made a mental note of it. That really stuck with me and highlighted how she cared about all swimmers, superstars or not.
She will be missed.

I have too many memories of Mrs. Olson to name just one - but one thing is certain....you always felt loved by Mrs. Olson. She remembered everything about you and your family...not just your times in swimming....but things you said, or did, or funny memories you shared. She remembered every detail about my wedding, and always reminded me how much she loved it (which meant so much!). She remembered every special occassion and was there to celebrate it with you if she could. She remembered my daughter's 1st birthday and called to wish her a happy one just a few weeks ago. She is honored and respected by all she came in contact with. She is nothing short of amazing, and will be missed dearly. Sometimes I sing "Little hands, little feet, 8 and unders can't be beat" to Summer and teach her some of our beloved Flyers cheers. She was our number one fan - all of us Flyers and our families. Her knowledge about each of the teams, about their swimmers, about their histories, was absolutely amazing, and it always resulted in a very equitable and competitive seeding for each of the teams. Joan was always there for the new teams in the league -- in 1986, when our team, South Run, joined the NVSL, Joan was there to help in any and every way possible. Our condolences to Joan's family. She was a very very special person; she had a tremendously positive impact on so many lives. She will be missed. Jay and Maureen Copan

Joan Olson appears in my children's scrapbooks numerous times over the years, so she will not be forgotten. She gave out the medals at All-Stars for most of the years that we were involved with the NVSL. She was always kind and made sure that each child received her congratulations with the medals they earned. She never rushed them--giving each child recognition. Joan helped the NVSL get into the kids' blood, and all three of my kids to whom she gave medals swam all four years of college. Thanks, Joan, for all you did for swimming and the NVSL. Mary B.

I remember seeing Joan at every meet, proudly watching her grandkids and other kids she knew. She often had a kind word to say about Giovi's races, and I was touched that she took the time to notice. She was so kind. I always looked forward to chatting with her in the summer. I'm so sorry for your loss. You have been and will be in my prayers.

During this difficult time we would like to extend our most heartfelt sympathies. We will all miss her smiling face at our Saturday morning swim meets but know she will be there with us watching from above.
