I took this picture visiting dad in Grafton while mom was in Morgantown Hospital. We had gotten up early that day to visit mom and on the way back, dad asked if we could just drive around. I agreed and he picked a road and off we went into the hills. We drove for hours along the back roads he knew growing up. At first he wanted to drive by certain spots but after a while we just started picking roads at random. Every once and a while he would ask me to stop so that he could tell me a story. He told me where family and friends lived, types of work he did to help support the family, places where he and his bother Homer would play music, and even a few places of mischief. At this point in his life, his eye sight was very bad and he would always amaze me how he knew where we were, I guess it just felt right to him. Sometime during our travels we ended up on the family farm. It's hard to tell in this photo, but he had the biggest grin on his face scratching those oversized ears.

On the day that my dad passed away, I was searching for that quintessential father-son moment to share. As I was sitting on our front porch that night starring at a rather large hunk of Detroit steel sitting in my driveway, I started thinking about the day he took me to buy my first car right after my 18th birthday, a 1972 Camaro. I also thought about the last time we bought a car together before I got married, a Toyota 4x4 truck, and all the other cars and trucks we bought together in between. We both really love car shopping. Even after that, whenever I bought a new car the very first person I wanted to show it to was him, and he always wanted the first ride. Last February the Saturday before my birthday I went looking for a new car for him and found a gorgeous GMC Acadia. I drove it over to my parents' house to show it to him. He absolutely loved it. So 2 days before my 50th birthday my Dad and I bought our last car together. It was a very special day, so special that the very next day, I took CJ to by her a new car. I couldn't imagine a better way to celebrate my birthday than car shopping with 2 of the most important people in my life.
