Obituary of Carlos Everett Dannacher

Carlos (Dan) E. Dannacher Colonel, United States Air Force Retired Colonel Carlos (Dan) Dannacher, a tactical fighter pilot whose military career spanned 34 years and three wars, died peacefully June 2, 2014 at Falcons Landing in Potomac Falls, Virginia. Colonel Dannacher, 95, logged more than 420 combat missions during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. When he retired in 1975, he was a command pilot with more than 4,800 flying hours. He was born on October 7, 1918 in Greensburg, Indiana. During WWII, he was a fighter pilot in the 5th Air Force and flew 319 combat missions. In Korea, he flew 100 combat missions in F-80s. He had one tour in the Pentagon in the Office of the Secretary of Defense before serving as Vice Commander of the 23rd Fighter Wing at McConnell AFB, Kansas. Dan served with the 7th Air Force in Saigon and then was the Wing Commander of the 601st Tactical Control Wing in Europe. His last active duty assignment was Chief of Staff of the Air University at Maxwell AFB, Alabama. During his military career he earned numerous awards and medals including the Legion of Merit with 3 Clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross with 3 Clusters, the Air Medal with 7 Clusters and three Presidential Unit Citations with 1 Cluster. He is also President Emeritus of the 40th Fighter Squadron Association. He earned an accounting degree from St. Louis University and his MBA from the University of Utah. His civilian pursuits included real estate and accounting ventures. He was a devoted Catholic and a Knight of Columbus, among many other religious activities. He was predeceased by his sister, Jean Sokol, of Anderson, IN and his loving wife, Dorothy Sullivan of New Berlin, IL. He is survived by his daughter, Stacy Dannacher Sullivan and her husband, Jim, and their three sons, Robert, Jack and James, of Marblehead, MA; and his son, Gregor T. Dannacher and his wife, Anne, and their children, Charles and Caroline, of New York, NY. Colonel Dannacher will be remembered with admiration and respect for his genuineness and integrity and for his daily adherence to especially high moral values, all pursued with love and kindness. He truly personified the best of what is known as the Greatest Generation. A Memorial Mass was held at Falcons Landing Chapel in Potomac Falls, VA on June 6, 2014. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Fort Myer Old Post Chapel on October 15, 2014, followed by graveside services and full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
