> Born at home in the small town of Pleasant City, Ohio, John was the second son of William Howard Carter and Helen Grace Hixson Carter. He has a brother, Fred R. Carter, ten years his senior with whom he was very close. The family moved to Caldwell, Ohio while he was still young where he attended Caldwell High School, graduating third in his small class of 32 in 1959. He attended Ohio State University for a short time and enlisted in The United States Army serving at The Pentagon during the Vietnam War. After his time of service, he returned to Canton, Ohio where he started a family and began a successful career in real estate, eventually opening his own agency. In 1977, he moved the family to Vienna, Virginia where he began a 35 year tenure with Nationwide Insurance Co. and remained the rest of his life.

> John was an avid horse lover, helping his father as a young boy train harness horses at the Noble County Fairgrounds. Eventually, he would breed and race his own horses, caring for them on his horse farm in Louisville, Ohio. As a young adult he loved boating and being out on the water and was an enormous fan of Johnny Cash, the Cleveland Browns, and of late, the Washington Nationals.
