Only a few short weeks before his passing, my dad accompanied me to my youngest sons graduation from VCU, in Richmond. I'm going to admit up front that because of my father's age and the fact that it took us almost 5 hours to drive from DC to Richmond, I thought he'd be spent by the end of the ceremony, but boy was I surprised.
The family all met at Chris's place to exchange cards and congratulations when someone in the group decided they should all do a shot of Jack Daniels. Someone asked my dad if he'd partake and he says, 'I'll do one with you!' And so he did...that should've been the clue of things to come, because the story unfolds.
Somewhere around 10 that evening, I'm talking to Chris's girlfriend when my dad starts poking me in the shoulder with his beer bottle. I turned and asked him what he needed to which he replied, 'this thing is empty; can't you do something about that?' It didn't stop there!
Around his 4th beer my dad yells down the table to my middle son; 'hey Ev.' 'Yeah grandpa?' 'I think it's about time we take a hop across the pond to go see some family in Germany. What do you think?' Evan yells back, 'Sounds good grandpa but it's gotta be next year because of the wedding.' Dad replied, 'works for me!!'
Nearing last call our waitress approached the table and looked at all the half-empty glasses and asks how we're holding up. I told her we were probably winding the party down and without missing a beat, my dad says, 'or closing this place down!'
He was caught up in the spirit of the moment and reveling in the company of his family. Hoo Rah, soldier. Hoo Rah!

Sorrow you can hold, however desolating, if nobody speaks to you. If they speak, you break down. ~Bede Jarrett

One needn't know a good man. Just knowing and observing his own son is testament to a truly successful life. Thank you, Millard, for your service to our nation - and for your son Tim!

In our last conversation my dad reminded me that 'Old soldiers never die. They just fade away!'
