To my dear sister, Mary,
I miss our morning chats on the telephone and all the advice you gave me throughout the years. I love and miss you.

As the mother of three young boys, I was used to their rambunctiousness, but was sensitive to people's rolling eyes when they would 'get active'. We were all at my in-laws house and the boys started to run around inside the house. We found a ball and shuttled them outside to run off some energy. Aunt Mary pulled my aside and said she liked how I handled that -- making sure the little guys weren't being a pest to others. I really appreciated the positive reinforcement -- it was sweet of her to recognize that we were at least trying to make an effort!

Mary was our oldest sister. Each morning we had things that we had to do. All of us,Mary ,Fran,Theresa and,I would have to sew the linens. I would do lace,Fran did something else and Mary did all the cut-work on the sheets ,pillowcases and tablecloths. This was for our dowry and then would get passed on to our children ,who don't want them because they have to be ironed!

We were on a family reunion in Lancaster. We went somewhere close by for dinner and after dinner everyone rode back to the hotel, but Mary and I walked back together. She liked walking very much and tried to walk frequently.

I met Mary thirty three years ago when I was a student physical therapy student at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital. The next year I began my first job as a physical therapist I quickly befriended her. She was in her sixties at the time but was popular with all the young physical therapists who also enjoyed her wisdom and her wit. When I moved out of my home and rented an apartment, Mary often had me over for dinner. I enjoyed her company and stories. She was quite proud of Margaret and Melissa and her her two great grandchildren when they came along. Mary will be missed and will always be in my prayers.

Nana and I would often sit and talk either while mom was doing something or when she went away for a business trip. One night we were having our nana/granddaughter talk and I mentioned to her that mom told me her hearing was going bad and that I should speak up, but that I was talking in a normal voice and she seemed to hear me just fine. Nana raised her eyebrows, looked at me and said "nothing is wrong with my hearing. Sometimes your mother just talks too much and I don't feel like answering her". I started laughing. According to nana EVERYONE talked too much with nothing important to say. I really miss my nana.

I was beginning my freshman year in high school, and spent a few weeks with Aunt Mary in Philadelphia. She took me shopping at John Wanamakers which is now Macys. She wanted me to shop for something new for my first day of school. She had beautiful taste and helped me to select a beautiful green plaid jumper with matching shoes and white blouse. She had a great eye for shoes. I was so grateful for her having taken me!
