Obituary of Herman Oliver Shipman

Herman Oliver Shipman was 62 when the Lord called him home on Monday, August 20, 2014. Born in New York, NY, he was the son of Mary and Nathan Shipman. Herman was an extremely gifted child and was selected to attend the prestigious Little Red School House in Manhattan, NY. After which he attended Aviation High School and received his diploma in Helicopter & Aircraft repair. He then joined the United States Air Force in 1968 and served two tours in Vietnam as a Bombardier and Loadmaster. Upon coming home from serving his country Herman attended Queens College and furthered his skillset as a tool & die maker and mechanical engineer. In 1975, he met his future wife Phyllis Campbell who he married in 1977. After the Shipman's were married, Herman then trained to become an Air Traffic Controller at LaGuardia Airport in NYC.
In 1988, Herman and Phyllis moved to Sterling, Virginia where Herman continued as an Air Traffic Controller at Dulles Airport in Washington DC. Upon retiring from Dulles Airport Herman spent his time as a commercial truck driver and a trainer for future air traffic controllers. In his spare time, Herman enjoyed riding motorcycles, fishing, and staying abreast of the newest technologic gadgets and games.
Herman was pre-deceased by his parents Mary and Nathan, and is survived by his loving wife of 39years, Phyllis; his older sister Vivian; his many nieces, nephews, great nieces-nephews; and his surrogate children- Laura & Louie (parrots) and Jade his beloved dog.
