Peter W. Odgers, Major General, USAF, Ret posted a condolence
Thursday, September 18, 2014
John,
I am a classmate of your Dad's. He and I were friendly while as mids and again after we won our wings ___ mine being USAF silver and Don's being USN gold. We followed each other for awhile during our initial flying assignments. I remember congratulating your Dad for capturing the altitude record in a USN turboprop aircraft. What an aviation history the Lilienthal family has had. I reside in the Dayton area ___ flew a Wright "B" Flyer replica for five years, therefore I am well acquainted with the Wright Brothers. I also know that they studied glider experiences of one of your distant relatives. What a heritage. Your Dad and I would have become best friends had I selected a career in the Navy. We both were dedicated to flying and served our respective services with dedication and professionalism. I extend my sincere condolences to you and your family for the loss of Don ___ bury him with his gold wings pinned to his chest, for he deserves a Bravo Zulu.
Warm regards,
Peter W. Odgers, Major General, USAF, Ret

Myles (Mick) Fladager posted a condolence

We just received the sad news and want to express our sincere condolences to the entire family. Don and I were fellow Minnesotans who made our way to the strange Eastern environs which included the Naval Academy. We were classmates, went through flight training at the same time and were squadron mates in VP-49 at Pax River. After that our paths went in different directions. Don was a whiz at math and engineering and graduated from the Test Pilot School. I was a dunce at those subjects so, unfortunately, I did not see much of him after VP-49. However, I saw enough to know that he was a skilled naval aviator, an excellent naval officer and a fine person. Those of us who were privileged to know him are the better for it.
My wife Phyllis joins in condolences, best wishes and much Aloha to the family, Myles (Mick) Fladager.

I'm so sorry to hear of Don's passing. He and I flew P2v's together in VP-8 in 1959-1960. He was my plane commander, and taught me a lot about flying and how to run a crew. For some reason I particularly remember one flight we flew on deployment to Argentia, Newfoundland in 1960 on iceberg patrol over Baffin Bay and having a very interesting discussion about survival in that area. Years later we lived around the corner from the Lilienthals in Esperanza and we remember all you kids as you were growing up. He was a fine officer and a great pilot. Please accept our sincere condolences.
