Adventures in Normandy, France 1994
In the early to mid-90's Kelly and I worked together at HQ US Army Europe, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, in the Resource Management Office. This was located in Heidelberg, Germany.
In 1992 our budget team (comprising of myself, Kelly and Chris Benavidez) was given the huge task of funding all commemorative events for the 50th Anniversary of WWII in Europe. The three main events were; the D-Day Landing on Omaha Beach, the Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne, Belgium, and the Allied Invasion of Southern France. The 50th Anniversary was actually in 1994, but we were given two years to work on this challenging project (to give you an idea of how massive the workload was).
In May of 1994 I spent two weeks on TDY at the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach executing contracts for the D-Day events, the largest of the ceremonies. There were over 10,000 WWII vets expected to attend the numerous celebrations in Normandy in June. We wanted to ensure each and every one of them was shown the proper gratitude, honor, and appreciation for their sacrifices 50 yrs ago.
June 4th, 1994 was rapidly approaching. Our team felt odd being so far away in Heidelberg, while all of events were going to be happening in Normandy. At the last minute Kelly and I went into our boss' office to request leave, so that we could witness the Normandy commemorations we had all worked so hard on. We were given the ok and LTC Pinson even gave us his video camera to shoot footage of this once-in-a-life time celebration. We grabbed a couple of sleeping bags, threw them in the trunk of Kelly's Toyota, and drove the 10hrs it took to get from Heidelberg to Normandy (going straight through France and right by the Eiffel Tower). That was interesting in itself, in the days before GPS and MapQuest.
We had no idea where we would sleep, hence the sleeping bags. We figured if we had to sleep on the office floor (temp trailers set up on the cemetery grounds), then we could do that. We arrived in the early evening and were stuck in traffic. Because I had worked at the site in May, I still had special access badges for us to use. We showed them to the local French police who had everything blockaded, and they actually escorted us to the cemetery (that was quite unbelievable). Shortly after arriving at the office, we could not believe what we found out. The NCOIC in charge of all the lodging, offered us to stay in an authentic 16th Century French Chateau, which had already been contracted and paid for two years earlier. The group of politicians, who were scheduled to stay there, decided that it may not look very good politically, so they cancelled out. The contract could not be broken, so it was available. It was owned by an American who had inherited it from her French mother and American father (they met during WWII in Normandy). It had 11 bedrooms and we were given our choice of which to stay in. We decided to room together, the beds were huge and it was a little scary in that big, old estate.
The next morning we were up bright and early. We headed to the American Cemetery for the first ceremony. We saw all of the major news networks and reporters including Katie Couric, Bryant Gumbel, Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather and Charles Osgood. We watched President Clinton arrive in his Air Force One helicopter. We met dozens of WWII vets, and listened to some of their stories. Witnessing all this and seeing the look of pride on their faces, was priceless.
Prior to the start of the official ceremony Kelly and I had to use the restroom. I knew where the "secret" facilities were located, which were there for the groundskeepers who work at the American cemetery. Kelly went in first while I stood outside waiting (it was a coed bathroom). I went in next and didn't bother to lock the door since no one knew where these restrooms were. While inside I could hear Kelly talking to someone, but couldn't understand what she was saying. All of a sudden someone opened the door and there I stood, in the process of zipping up my jeans! The man realized I was in there and immediately shut the door. I could hear Kelly talking some more. After I came out I realized the "someone" was no other than Walter Cronkite! He was there to give the opening speech, and the Army Major who was escorting him also knew where this "secret" restroom was located. As I walked out Mr. Cronkite apologized and seemed a bit embarrassed. The Major was waiting a little ways up the sidewalk so he didn't see exactly what happened. After talking to him to confirm it was Mr. Cronkite, we found out the reason he walked in on me was because he was very hard of hearing. Kelly was trying to tell him that I was in there, but he couldn't hear her. We decided to wait for Mr. Cronkite to come out so that we could shake his hand and laugh about the whole incident, which we did.
Kelly and I were also very fortunate to have experienced the ceremonies at St Mere Eglise (where the 101st and 82d Airborne Paratroopers landed on D-Day) as well as Point du Hoc, where the 2nd Army Rangers climbed up the steep cliffs while enduring enemy gun fire and many casualties.
I have most of this trip on video tape (now converted to DVD). Kelly has a copy too. The footage is awful because neither of us really knew how to work that huge video recorder (video-taping was still new back in '94). But I will cherish it forever, the memories I made with Kelly I will always hold deep in my heart. This project and the spur-of-the-moment trip, is unquestionably the highlight of my 30yr career as an Army Civilian. I cannot think of anyone who I would have rather had those experiences with

Kelly was a close friend when we were in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, US Army, Europe, in Heidelberg, Germany in the mid-90s. We enjoyed the beauty of music and enjoyed singing. She was so good that the Director of the Community Theater asked her to script, choreograph and direct a musical tribute in honor of the 50th Anniversary of D-Day. Kelly immediately went to work in selecting appropriate music, auditioning participants and contracting a pianist. It became obvious the first night the pianist, the singers and Kelly had their own idea of how to present their rendition of the music. Small and petite Kelly, with a strong personality and an even stronger ability to control the situation, often elbowed her way between a diva and the pianist, bringing calm to yet another confrontation. All of this was occurring as Kelly coordinated visits to the USAREUR Theater Costume Warehouse. "I want to wear this" was the common remark by the performers. "You are going to wear this!" was most often Kelly's retort. Then, one week before the first performance, the pianist threw a fit and told Kelly the performers were unable to follow his interpretation of how the songs should be sung. He walked! As most of us shook our heads and said, "Good riddance," tiny Kelly, following the rather large pianist off the stage and out the door, stomped step for step behind him. What happened in the parking lot, none of us were privileged to know, but suffice it to say her persuasive and direct manner of negotiations resulted in the pianist returning and rehearsals continuing. The performances were not without drama either (forgotten lyrics, costume malfunctions, stage fright, etc) but Kelly's calm, loving, demeanor kept the show going and the audience never had an inkling of the drama Kelly was managing. Kelly delivered the most beautiful rendition of "Over the Rainbow" I have heard. She made it a successful production because of her perseverance, her artistry, her genuinely warm and caring personality and her love for music. Thank you for the music, Kelly!

I am so sorry for your loss. It seems so unfair that death should have the power to take away someone you love. God has promised to put an end to all suffering. Please read that promise at Rev 21: 3+4. My hope is that the family and friends of Kelly Maurer find comfort in the scriptures.
