Tillie Druvicie (Trudy) Barrows Trudy Barrows passed away peacefully on October 3, 2014 at the age of 94 in Haymarket, VA. She was born in McMinnville, TN on February 25, 1920 to the late Acie Monroe and Myra (Turner) Bain. After a youth spent on a farm, she attended technical college in Chattanooga and later joined many young women of her time in becoming a "Government Girl." The Government Girls came to Washington DC in the early years of World War II to work for the Federal Government in the positions vacated by the men who had gone to fight the war. She continued with the Government until her retirement from the US Geological Survey. Trudy enjoyed needlework, reading, and gardening, and was active in her church. However, her main joy in life was caring for her family and staying connected with all of her relatives. After retirement, she and her husband enjoyed day trips with friends and activities at the senior center. Trudy was married for sixty years to the late Norman Barrows, the love of her life. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters: Obea Bain of Tennessee, Earline Griffin of Tennessee, and Maurine Quick of Tennessee. She is survived by her daughter Catherine Barrows of South Riding, VA, by her sister Dorothy Swinford of Tullahoma, TN, and by numerous nieces and nephews in Tennessee, Connecticut, and Maine. After completing studies at the Farmington (Maine) Normal School, Norman spent a short time teaching in a one room schoolhouse. He then joined the US Army at the beginning of World War II. He served with the 216th General Hospital in England. After the war he married the love he met while in basic training at Camp Forrest in Tullahoma, TN. On August 3, 1946, Norman married Tillie Druvicie (Trudy) Bain of Fayetteville, TN. They had one daughter, Catherine, in 1953. Norman spent his career with the Federal Government. His interests included bowling, fishing, softball, golf, and reading. He also devoted time to helping others. He drove elderly people without transportation to medical appointments, was a volunteer bingo caller at a nursing home, was always available to help a friend or neighbor, and was active in his church; often playing Santa Claus for the kids of the church on Christmas. In addition to his parents, Norman was preceded in death by his siblings Eldon Barrows of Maine, and Stella Knowlton of Connecticut. He is survived by his wife Trudy of Chantilly, VA, his daughter Catherine Barrows of South Riding, VA, and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews from Maine, Connecticut, and Tennessee.
