Ron and family, We only briefly new Marca and wish we had been able to spend more time with her and you. What we can see in your family during this short time is the best testament ever to the "best mom ever" as your kids would say! Thanks to each of you, and especially Marca, for glorifying God in all she did to raise/teach a great family, fellowship in her community of quilters and teach ESL. We appreciate each of you and offer our love as you go through this journey of grief yet knowing she is in the arms of our Lord in heaven. Greg and Joy

Depending on who one asks, I met Marca sometime between 1966 and 1978. My version of history holds to 1978, but that is part of what makes our love story a little different than normal. You see, long before Marca and I were even on the scene, our parents were 'connected' - a small farming community, church, and school. In high school, Ronald Charles Fritzemeier - my Dad - was the 'big guy' on the football team. Marca's Dad - Robert Henry Wendelburg - was a freshman on the team and everyone knows that freshmen need "help" growing up. However, my Dad made clear that Bob was 'protected,' and no one argues with the 'big guy.' I admit, beyond their friendship, Dad had his reasons … Bob had a car and drove right past Dad's place to go to school, so Bob was Dad's 'wheels' for school. You take care of your wheels. Then, as Dad's romance blossomed with Thais Glenn, and Bob's with Vangie McComb, the two couples developed and enjoyed a great and lasting friendship. Mom & Dad moved away from Stafford in the late fifties, yet the Fritzemeier-Wendelburg friendship endured.
In 1966, the Fritzemeiers went back to Kansas to visit family. While there, I remember going to the Wendelburg place, being treated to a real sleigh ride. Bob hooked up the donkeys and took us out in the wonderful-cold winter air of Kansas. I swear to this day, that is all I remember of the Wendelburg family in 1966. Marca, to the day she died, tells the story differently. She retold this to the kids hours before she died. You see, little Marca had a lovely tea set she had managed even as a small child to keep well-preserved - up until the Fritzemeier boys stormed her home! Over the years Marca would recount vivid memories of us breaking her tea set.
In 1976, on another pilgrimage to Stafford, my Mom & Dad stayed at the Wendelburg place; but us kids were spread around. At the Wendelburgs, I remember being so impressed by Vance Wendelburg's fireworks "arsenal," and he shared too! However, I have zero recollection of meeting or talking to a Wendelburg girl … after all, she didn't have fireworks.
In 1978, we planned another trek back to Kansas to visit family. I remember hearing my Mom talking on the phone one day; talking with Vangie Wendelburg about our upcoming visit. My mother - whom I would never accuse of lying, but maybe "generously embellishing" - told Vangie, "our Ron is so looking forward to seeing Marca again." This caught my ear, and so when she was done with the call I asked her two things, "Mom, who were you just talking to, and who is Marca? … I didn't even know the Wendelburgs had a girl."
In Kansas, there "just happened" to be enough room for me to stay at the Wendelburg's home, and, yes, I met Marca. Marca was this really cute girl - I always loved her nose - who had the sharpest wit and knew how to tease, but in the sweetest way. Well, its not like we got to Kansas and I decided to spend all my time with a girl. Oh no. Our mothers conspired, shamelessly, "Marca, could you go to the store and get me something; oh, and take Ron with you. Marca, we decided to get pizza for dinner, could you go to Pratt (35 miles away!!) and get pizza for us from Pizza Hut? Oh, and take Ron with you." But our mothers were not alone. When sitting on the couch in the Wendelburg family room, Marca and I sat next to each other with a highly respectable separation. In comes Bob, who "decides to sit on the couch. He sat down on Marca's other side and there was not quite enough room, so here comes Marca, squish, but I don't remember complaining. For some reason, the shameless acts of our parents worked. By the time we left, I screwed up the courage to ask Marca - get this - for her address! Yes, I know, I couldn't have been clumsier. Marca teased me on that too, but it did begin what became a letter-writing courtship (for many of you, get on the internet and search on pen-and-ink letter writing … its an ancient form of email).
"Surprisingly," for the Christmas of 1978, the Wendelburg family decided it was high time to visit the Fritzemeier family in California. I don't think I said much about that, but by then I appreciated our parents' efforts. By the following year, I changed schools to go to Kansas State University. That Christmas, Marca agreed to marry me; just as important, Marca's dad fully concurred. The next year we both moved back to Fresno State, and we married after our junior year of college.
Over the years, I have enjoyed watching how people react when Marca or I tell them that ours was an arranged marriage. People act confused, or disbelieving, or curious … sometimes a mix of all three. I always add at this point, I am the truest believer in the old adage, "Mother knows best." Certainly this was true in my life. I cannot imagine a more wonderful, loving, and giving best friend than I had in Marca!
Our love story did not end there. God blessed us with four wonderful children. Marca poured her life and love into each one: Ron (Chip), Rob, Lyndee, and Russ. No school could ever hold a candle to the Fritzemeier Family School, led by Marca Fritzemeier: teacher, administrator, and librarian. Through all the subjects, getting to know and love Jesus, experiencing the world God made, and learning about God's love for others were central. Today, both Chip and Rob have married - Chip to Rebecca Olson, and Rob to Hannah Barber - and God allowed Marca to participate in their weddings, just this year. Marca also got to see Lyndee graduate from Liberty and begin her teaching career, and also enjoy Russ' graduation from Virginia Tech with plans to go to medical school, God willing.
Our love story continued on to Marca's other endeavors. Besides always always supporting me in whatever activities I wanted to take on, Marca loved to serve people. Her love for others through her quilting endeavors is on display in many homes of family and friends - each quilt a true labor of love and joy; Marca also loved to teach, because she loves people. Marca was a steadfast teacher in Reston Bible's English as a Second Language program. Marca's joy in teaching was only surpassed by her obvious love and care for her students. Over the past months as Marca's health prevented her from teaching at ESL, I enjoyed the privilege of having many of her students come to me and inquire of Marca's status and tell me that they were praying for her. I cannot think of a greater picture of love stemming from a God who loves us so deeply.
And so, on the 21st of October, in the year of our Lord 2014, Marca went home to be with the Lord. My heart is broken; I won't deny it. But I also know that everything I've told you about our love story is actually just the tiniest pre-amble to the real love story, which is God's unfathomable love for my dearest friend, Marca Lynn (Wendelburg) Fritzemeier.
