Was telling a colleague who never had the pleasure of working with Jim a story about him, and realized that 4 years later, his presence is still sorely missed. He was kind, original, and brilliant. He loved geology. Geology was the framework that he used to organize all the information the world threw at him, but he was not constrained by it, if anything, he could find connections that no one else saw, because of it. I am very selfishly sorry I can’t talk with him anymore.

When I worked with Jim at Cape Canaveral I was heartened that such a renowned DNAPL expert was such a respectful gentleman even in heated discussions. It was an honor to use Mercer & Cohen all these years and to have met Jim on several occasions. My condolences.

My sympathy to the Mercer family. James and I graduated together , class of '65. Catching up with him via Facebook confirmed he grew into a well rounded, successful man. He had one of the most beautiful smiles ever! Even as we aged, his smile lit up a room.

I was very saddened to learn of James' passing. We were classmates in the Bay High School Class of '65. I join with all in our class in offering condolences to the Mercer family. He was a wonderful friend, classmate, and teammate. Although the years and miles distanced us from James, he will be sorely missed but wonderfully remembered at our class reunion this summer. Our prayers are with you in your time of grief.
