Nancy Cole Smith November 14, 1938 - March 20, 2015 Nancy Cole Smith passed away on March 20, 2015 in Fairfax, Virginia. She is survived by her husband, Richard (Dick) Smith and Sisters Ruth Bates, Janet Harper and Carolyn Church. Brothers Ozzie Cole and Bernie Cole and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at Adams-Green Funeral Home with a viewing from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. with the funeral immediately following. A private grave side service will be held on Thursday, March 26th at the Herndon Cemetery. She is preceded in death by her father Arthur "Pappy" Cole, Hazel "Nan-Naw" Cole, brothers Bobby and Ernie Cole. Nephews - Bill Bates, Gary Cole, Jarrett Church, Bernie Cole, Joel Shepherd Nieces - Nancy Bates, Tracy Baker, Melissa Alexander, Karen Sprouse, Leslie Stagg Stepchildren - Susan McMuray and Richard Smith She attended Manassas Church of the Nazarene for many years where she sang in the choir. In fact Nannie dropped out of high school so she could become a famous singer but her sister Ruth convinced her that probably wasn't going to happen and persuaded her, as only Ruth can do, to go back to high school where she graduated from Herndon High School. She was an operator for AT&T where she eventually retired. Once she retired from ATT&T, she became a full-time babysitter for Jenny, William and Brooklyn. Nancy and Bill agree that the only thing they had to worry about everyday was how spoiled their kids where going to be. They knew that no one could take care and love their kids like Nannie. Nannie also treated the neighborhood kids as her own. Her house was always full of children. Volunteering to babysit whenever someone needed one, sneaking the kid's candy so their parents wouldn't know and loving them as if they were hers. She was also known for the special foods that only Nannie could make. Egg sandwiches for Brooklyn and Nancy in the morning, potato salad, fried chicken and most importantly, chicken salad. Even when she ended up in Fairfax Nursing Home, her giving and generous nature was known. Nurses, aids, housekeeping, everyone would stop and see her. She always made sure she had candy to share and hugs and kisses to give to them. During the last few days when she was asleep, nurses and aids who didn't take care of her anymore stopped by to kiss her on her forehead and tell her how much they loved her.
