Obituary of Kristina Grist

Kristina Barron Grist, 49, of Oak Hill, VA died on Sunday, July 26, 2015 at her home. Kris was born February 28, 1966 in El Centro, CA. She was the daughter of Benny Barron and Margie and Richard Trainor. She was preceded in death by her young son, Andrew Barron Dodd. Kris graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in Manassas, VA; University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA; and Catholic University Law School in Washington, DC. She spent her early career working at the US Embassy in Venezuela and transitioned to defense contracting as a successful Senior Proposal Manager. For the past two years, she volunteered tirelessly at the Embry Rucker Community Shelter in Reston, VA. Survived by her daughter Kelly of Oak Hill, VA; her father, Benny of Tucson, AZ; her mother and stepfather, Margie and Dick of Reston, VA, she is also survived by her sister, Karmela Barron, and her beloved nephews Gus and Luke Summers, of Oak Hill, VA. Kris's greatest loves in life were her children and her nephews. She kept Andrew's spirit alive by often telling stories of his clever antics, endless energy, and love of Star Trek. Her love and support for her daughter was immeasurable - her focus was to raise a strong, independent, and loving young woman. In the words of her beautiful daughter, Kelly, "Mom, thanks for teaching me to be tough, stubborn, opinionated, and to speak out, especially if it's for the little guy or making a few people unhappy. To always be polite and kind but never a pushover." Kris was also known for her love of flowers, cooking, eccentric style, irreverent sense of humor, and never ending supply of curse words. She was extremely loyal and adored her friends. She will be remembered for her big heart and generosity. She volunteered in her community; went on mission trips to Honduras with her church; and was always willing to give the shirt off her back.
