Obituary of Elizabeth Anne Schmude

Elizabeth "Betty" Schmude, 77, of Sterling, VA, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2015 at Capital Caring Adler Center for Caring. Born on November 13, 1937 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania she was the daughter of the late John Joseph Quirk II and the late Helen Alley Quirk. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, John Joseph Quirk III and her sister June Mattson. She graduated from Trinity College in Washington, D.C. with a degree in Education with a major in French. Later, she worked for The Library of Congress and as a school teacher for several schools including St. Camillus Parish School and St. Mary's High School in MD, and Notre Dame Academy in Middleburg, Va. She volunteered as a religious education teacher at St. Joseph Church in Herndon, Va. She was a founding member of Christ The Redeemer Catholic Church in Sterling, Va. and formed a bridge club there. In her spare time, she was an avid reader and a lover of languages including French, Spanish, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. She also greatly enjoyed activities with many local Catholic churches. She is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Douglas Schmude; her three children include Ann Dunbar and her husband, Andrew, Beth Chesney and her husband, Chuck, and Doug Schmude Jr. and his wife, April. Her grandchildren include Brendan Fitzgerald, Bridget Chesney, Katrina Schmude, Donovan Schmude, Jonathan Chesney, Cogan Dunbar, Savannah Schmude, and Ethan Chesney. Her surviving sisters include Helene Annan, Sister Anne Quirk and Winifred Egenstafer. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday, August 13, 2015 at Adams Green Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, August 14, 2015 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Herndon. Entombment will follow at Chestnut Grove Cemetery.
