Dear Mary Jo and Barbara
We were deeply saddened to hear about Marty. For many years your family opened your home every week for the Girl Scout meetings and activities. Your families giving and unselfishness made a lasting impression on so many. We fondly remember all of the drop off and pickups at the Kirwan's. Typically Marty would be outside greeting everyone with that warm smile of his. You could always count on him making you laugh sometime in the conversation with him. We recall how much he enjoyed working in the yard or hanging holiday decorations outside. Such a humble gentleman with a unique and wonderful temperament. It seemed to be the simple things in life that gave him great pleasure.
Please know Marty made a difference in the lives of so many he touched. Treasure all the wonderful memories . Our deepest sympathy.

I have only known Marty for a relative short period of time. I joined the Forest Grove family 3 years ago as a Registrar. Marty was the first one to welcome me aboard with a strong hand shake an a great hug. It was so obvious how much he loved his job and how much he enjoyed the company of te kids and they enjoyed his. When his father got ill many we would talk about both our parents as they were both similar in age. So many times we spoke about New York as we both enjoyed talking about our home towns.
Marty you are so missed already, you will be so missed at Forest Grove. Remember how many times we spoke about my Mom and how much I missed her, give her a big hug from me and for you my prayers and I'll remember that awesome Irish smile.

Dear Mr. Kirwan's family and friends. Our family is so sad to hear the news of Marty's passing. He taught both our children for 3 years each at Forest Grove. He was always positive and wonderful to the children. He had a great sense of humor and was a huge asset to our school community!
I'm so sorry that I was not aware of the severity of his illness. I spend a lot of time at Forest Grove as a parent and on the PTA board. Another parent and I were just at the school helping on Tuesday. We were discussing the upcoming year, new and old teachers. We both thought Marty was teaching.
Our deepest sympathy to all of your family. He will truly be missed. My you find comfort in your memories.

Marty's dad and my mom are first cousins, but because we lived so far apart I never met Marty or Mary Jo until my sisters and I were in town for an event, and they hosted a mini-family reunion so we could all get together with the extended local Kirwans. It was a wonderful day and I felt (and wished!!) that I had known this wonderful family all along. I had a great chat with Marty and I remember telling him that he reminded me of my grandfather Raymond Bock (Marty's great-uncle), because he was "so buff". I swear he blushed from his fingertips to the top of his head! I found a photo that I took that day, and I still see the resemblance.
To Mary Jo, Barbara and all the family, I'm thinking of you all, and wish you strength and courage to see you through the days ahead, and peace and comfort in your dearest memories.
Love Kathy

We were deeply saddened to learn of Marty's death on Sunday. Marty lived next door and was a huge part of our neighborhood. He knew and enjoyed interacting with everyone, including the children. Yesterday, our grandchildren were sharing their memories of how Mr. Marty, as they called him, spent a weekend putting together a swing set in our backyard, brought over popsicles on hot days, decorated an outdoor playhouse with Christmas lights, built a snow fort, and set off the best fireworks display in Herndon. Marty was always ready to lend a hand, loved to talk politics, and cared deeply for his family. Our lives have been enriched by knowing Marty. Carole and Richard Clarke

Mr. Kirwan was my sons PE teacher at Sanders Corner many years ago. My son is now a sophomore in college and when I told him of his passing he wanted me to share this: I wanted to share with you my favorite memory of Mr. Kirwan. It was the day after we got back from a snow day, and he was telling us how much he enjoyed them. So much that he would wake up and throw snowballs at his neighbors leaving for work saying "should have been a teacher, Frank!" Always loved seeing him. He helped a lot of kids get through some hard times. ~Jacob Fonseca~ What a special man he was! I too enjoyed working with him as a substitute there and loved seeing his smiling face in the halls. He thoroughly enjoyed being a teacher for more reasons than snow days! We are so sorry for the family and all the lives he touched.

I taught PE with Marty at Forest Grove Elementary for five wonderful years. Marty would go all out for the holidays when it came to decorating the Gym for classes and the kids. It made coming to work even more enjoyable. Christmas was the best! The Gym was a winter wonderland for activities of fitness... The walls were covered with snowflakes and snowmen. The stage had as many blow-up as it could hold. The steps had twinkle lights drapped along them. I can still hear the Christmas carols in my head if I close my eyes. The kids having fun, laughing, learning health, and enjoying fitness, that's what Marty strived to accomplish in PE class. Teaching with Marty was like having Christmas Everyday!

My family first met Mr. Kirwan in 2008, when our son began kindergarten. Sam was lucky enough to have Mr. Kirwan as a PE teacher numerous times during his time at Sanders Corner. I think, by far, his (and my) best memory is of hot chocolate. Sam was one of Mr. Kirwan's patrols in 5th Grade. Sam knew this was quite an honor, and took great pride in his work. There was a particuarly long stretch of cold, and it happened that Sam spent each morning, for those frigid two weeks, outside in the car loop, opening car doors and greeting his fellow students. One day, I asked how he was holding up. He took off his hat and gloves and got a big grin on his face. "Much better today," he said. "Mr. Kirwan brought us hot chocolate from Starbucks". He was that kind of educator. He took care of "his kids" and his love for teaching shone on his face. Thank you, Mr. Kirwan. The Little Family will miss you.

Marty was my Irish twin, we were just 11 months apart but for 10 days we were the same age. I was curious to see what the definition of brother was, so I looked it up in the definition and it states: “a brother is a man or boy in relation to other sons and daughters of his parents.” That seemed so plan and simple to me. So I came up with my own definition of what a brother is – a brother is someone who is loving, kind, generous, caring, full of life, gives and doesn’t take, will have your back no matter what. This is my brother Marty. Marty had a heart of gold; he was a gentle soul, he would do anything for anyone always seeing the positive in everyone and everything. He was never one to be quite, he would make friends standing in line at the store. He was a person of integrity and values, family came first. He loved his wife Mary Jo and his daughter Barbara, they were his world. I can’t thank them both enough for taking such wonderful care of him. He kept us laughing and left us so many wonderful memories. Marty will always have a special place in my heart that will never go away.

I taught PE with Marty at Forest Grove Elementary. Marty was a hero for serving our country in the U.S. Army. He is a hero for the kindness he showed friends with his laugh and smile. Marty is a hero for being a wonderful loving husband to Mary and devoted loving father to Barbara. He is a hero for the ripple of light that will forever shine from every student that he taught. Marty is the definition of a HERO!

I've known Marty since he was about 15 years old. He was always an outgoing person, who loved to make people laugh. It was less than a month ago that I was working with him remodeling his dads house. We've had many head to head horseshoe matches over the years, maybe the one thing he didn't joke about but was very serious during the game. Although we may not have seen eye to eye all the time, I'm honored to have known him and had him as a brother-in-law. Rest in Peace Marty.

I feel so blessed that each of my four children have had the opportunity to know Mr. Kirwin. He was an incredibly thoughtful, fun, caring man who loved the kids and always had a genuine smile and a kind word to share with them! He shared a birthday with my oldest daughter, Shelby, who also happens to have special needs. Mr. Kirwin would always remind her of "their" birthday whenever he saw her, bringing a huge smile to her face! He always took an interest in the sports my son, Stuart was playing and offered positive encouragement to him to work hard and keep at it. My daughter Sabrina loved being a patrol with Mr. Kirwin, and fondly remembers that he would bring hot chocolate for them on Fridays during the cold winter months! My youngest, Stephanie loved how fun and funny he was! He was one of a kind; a true gentle spirit who loved what he did and who made an impression on all who knew him! We all will miss you dearly, Mr. Kirwin ~ Sanders Corner won't be the same without you! Our deepest condolences to his family.

My children loved having Mr. Kirwan as their PE teacher. He was such a positive person and incredibly funny. Marty had a gift to know how to put you at ease and make you feel comfortable. I will miss his smiling face and kind heart. One of my first times subbing at SCES was in PE with Marty. He was so patient with me as I tried to figure out what to do. It was obvious how much he loved his daughter as he spoke so proudly about her that day. My deepest condolences to his family.
