Just read the sad news. Gustavo was by far one of the finest, quiet, young men I have had a chance to be around in all my years of scouting. He was so helpful, kind, and polite.
Gustavo I look forward to seeing you again on one of God's trails.
Peace be with you.
Warm regards,
Ken Sullivan

Book of Memories: I met Gus this summer at the Sterling District home where members of Nichiren Buddhism meet each Tuesday evening to pray for world peace. As we chanted for world peace and each person’s happiness, every time that I saw Gus he was hopeful, and sought and received deep support from his Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist family. Gus was suffering, but he always tried again for a fresh start at our loving, self-empowering meetings. Of course, I am very saddened by his death. Gus will always be a delightful, handsome, smart, and polite individual, for whom I will continue to pray/chant for his eternal happiness, for the rest of my life. Betsy Rowley Wheeler

Gus came to us in a very different way than most of our employees.
One day I fielded a phone call from a gentleman named Travis. He said he was with Fairfax county and was looking to for local businesses in which he could place youth for short-term work. I told Travis that I was very interested and he should sign us up. When I got an email from Travis a few weeks later saying he had located a potential intern for us, I said send him on in!
Gus showed up on his first day a bit late and slightly sheepish. He apologized for his tardiness but was very eager to work. I knew we had a lot to teach him but he instantly showed promise.
Gus wasn't the most social around the shop, but by the end of the summer with us, he would sit in on our story session and even came out to ride bikes with us a few times. He learned how to build bikes, kept the shop spotless - and I mean spotless. The first hour of every day he spent cleaning without ever being asked. After cleaning, he'd always come to me and ask; "Excuse me sir, is there anything you need built today?" We'd take a walk and go see what was in the queue for the day.
It wasn't often that Gus would ask for help as he was a very fast learner. If we showed him something once, he usually got it and was able to hone his skills on his own. But if he did need help, he politely come to one of us and ask for guidance.
I remember one day, Gus was building a kids bike and we heard a big BOOM! from back in the service area. I got up from my computer and headed back to see what had happened. Gus was white as a ghost because he had just popped the inner tube on that kids bike. He was trying to fix it before we found out and when we "caught" him he instantly offered to pay for it. I think this was the moment Gus realized the bike shop is a bit different than a lot of place. I told him, "Gus, I can't even count how many tubes I've popped over the years. You don't owe us anything for that! It happens to everyone and I bet it won't be the last for you." At that moment I could see it in his face that he felt a bit more comfortable with us and started to open up a bit from there.
Unfortunately that was the last tube that Gus ever popped while working at the shop. We were saving him a place next summer to come back and work if he moved back from Virginia Tech. I often wondered how he was doing and feel as though I should have reached out just to say Hi.
Gus, if you're listening, The guys at A-1 Cycling are so sorry to hear you have left. We wish you flowy trails and technical climbs, sunny days and breeze in your face. Your time at A-1 and with your family was too short. You will be missed but not forgotten. Want to go for a ride next time I see you?
