Wilmoth Francis Mack "Bud"
Born October 13, 1926
Died December 9, 2015
Bud was born in Des Moines, IA and died in the Greenspring Retirement Village, Springfield, VA. He attended the University of Maryland where he met Joyce Frederick, with whom he would marry in 1949. While at the University of Maryland he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and later was a Graduate of the American Institute of Baking in Chicago, IL. Bud enlisted in the Army the day after he graduated from High School and was off to Basic Training at Fort Dix, NJ. He fought for our country during WWII in Okinawa and then again in the Korean War. In Okinawa, Bud was in the 193rd Tank Battalion and fought the Japanese from his Sherman tank. He was stationed in Stuttgart Germany during the Korean War when a General found out about his baking skills and his MOS was changed to support the General and his staff. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal Japan.
His lifetime occupation was in the food service industry starting with Marriott Hot-Shoppes and then with Topps Drive -In, Gino's, KFC and Auth Brothers, selling to military bases in the Washington area. He was a member of the International Food Service Executive Association and was awarded the Honorary rank of Brigadier General. He was also a member of the Epicurean Club and was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was on the Board of the Northern Virginia Community College Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Curriculum Committee, Stratford Place at Kingstown HOA and the Heritage Hunt Golf and Country Club Finance Committee.
It wasn't until Bud retired in 1995 that he could spend more time with his family and volunteered at the Smithsonian Museum Culinary operations. Joy and Bud enjoyed taking vacations to see this country they loved. They took a long train trip through the United States to the west coast and back to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They enjoyed other trips to Arizona and Chicago to see his beloved Cubs at spring training. He followed the Cubs since he was a little boy named Buddy. Bud enjoyed family lineage and spent much time searching for relatives that they could later find in the mid-west cemeteries. Bud enjoyed family get-togethers, especially if there were cakes to be cut or gravy to be made. His talents were always appreciated. He often listened to the Dorsey brothers, Nat King Cole and other tunes from the Big Band era. As he aged his music tastes expanded to Lori Morgan.
Bud is survived by his loving wife, Joyce, of 66 years. They had four children, Joyce Kendall (deceased), Lee of Herndon, VA, Vicki McConnell of Springfield, VA and Bruce of Cumming GA. There are nine grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren as a result of his life.
