Michael Kern, 65, of Vienna, VA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 15, shortly after midnight. He was surrounded by loved ones.
Born on August 30, 1950, in Arlington, VA, he was the son of the late John Henry Kern. In addition to his father he was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Weil.
Michael Kern lived in Lorton, Virginia as well as Annandale, Virginia, where he attended Annandale High School. Michael excelled at sports and was a varsity Middle- Linebacker on the Annandale High School football team.
After high school, Michael enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. and served two tours in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. During his time in Vietnam he was awarded many accolades for bravery, including seven Purple Hearts. Michael was proud to be a Marine and honored to serve his country.
After the Marine Corps. Michael worked in the wholesale food industry, in a career that spanned over 20 years. Michael worked with many restaurateurs in the Virginia, DC and Maryland area and shared his passion for food and cooking with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah Kern of Vienna, VA; daughter Sara Kern and her husband Gaelen Thomasian of Asheville, NC; daughter Rebecca Kern of Asheville, NC; brother William "Butch" Kern of Fredricksburg, VA; brother Steven Kern of Mt. Crawford, VA; brother David Kern of Fairfax, VA; sister Bonnie Fairbank of Alexandria, VA; sister Kathy Kern of Huntingtown, MD.
The family will receive friends from 5:00PM until 7:00PM on Sunday, December 20, 2015 at Adams Green Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00PM on Monday, December 21, at Pohick Church with Rev. Chuck McCoart of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church officiating. The service will be conducted at the gravesite with burial following at the Pohick Church cemetery.
