Obituary of William Ellsworth Garrett

Bill/Pat was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa, August 23, 1932, to William E. Garrett and Marguerite Argo. He was formerly married to Martha Hauenstein from 1951-1968, with whom he had two children, William E. (III) and Elizabeth. He was married to Mary Jane Slover from 1969 until his death, and with whom he had two children, son Alexander and his wife Julie of Falls Church, VA, and daughter Regla, also of Sterling. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, brothers Terrence, Lovelloyd and Frank, and one sister, Shirley. In addition to his surviving spouse and children, he is also survived by granddaughter Heather Garrett and grandson Carl Garrett of Iowa and a sister Sandy Prendergast of Iowa. He is also survived and will be sorely missed by his grand-dogs Kelpie, Zoey, Candy and Jade, grand-horse Indy, and his cat Muppet.
Bill/Pat served in the United States Navy from 1951 until retirement in 1982, when he retired as Master Chief Cryptologic Technician (CTMCM E-9). His favorite stations included the submarine USS Growler; Kamiseya, Japan; Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Submarine Base, Groton, CT; Naval Station Rota, Spain; Naval Security Station Nebraska Ave, Washington, D.C. and RAF Edzell, Scotland, UK.
He was a past member of Masonic Lodges in Laurencekirk, Scotland and Rota, Spain; and a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church, Sterling, VA. A special thanks to all the wonderful staff and volunteers at Herndon Harbor Adult Day Health Care Center, Herndon, VA. He really loved it there.
Information for internment in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA will be forthcoming.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages friends and loved ones to donate to the Alzheimer's Association at a special fund. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2010.
