In 2005 I was sitting in my car because I was too early for a job interview. My phone rang and an aquaintance in the same industry asked me who I was interviewing with. I said Dale Carafa .He said "Oh great . I know who she is and you can't go wrong there." Who knew that truer words were never spoken?
Dale hired me and we soon found out that we were both Jersey girls and had lived in two different places in Northern Virginia at about the same time. We had taken our kids to the same pool and shopped at the same stores. We both had one daughter around the same age. Our paths had definitely crossed before. We soon became not only co-workers, but fast friends and remained friends after the office closed.
I thought I was pretty energetic until I met Dale. When i mentioned her energetic spirit ran circles around mine, she laughed and said it was because she was so much younger than me.She never let me forget that !(It was just a year's difference) Although very strong-willed, she had such a generous, thoughtful and giving nature. I once found her cleaning alot of snow off my car because she knew when the arhtritis was kicking in even before I did. There were many times I got a text the night before not to bring lunch because she had picked up extra salads from Santinis.
We travelled to Ocean Beach together. She said the key card to her room didn't work and they had given her the wrong room or wrong key card. The front desk's customer service was less than stellar .Dale and I were highly indignant. Later she realized she had another card in her purse from somewhere she and Ed had just been and she was using the wrong key..We were doubled over laughing .We never told the front desk.
I have so many wonderful memories my heart is full. My only regret is that I didn't get to know her sooner all those years ago when our paths crossed. But how very lucky I am to have known her for the time I did. She will be honored, remembered, and loved always.

When I finally met the Carafa's in 1985, I don't think Dale said 5 words the whole night. Later I found out it was because she was told I didn't like children. She had some bad information.
Later that year, my Mom died, and Dale was the first call I made. While I was on the phone, making plans to drive to Dunkirk, Dale walked in, started doing the dishes and said "If you want me to go with you, I will." Who does something like that? Dale Carafa. It is something that has stuck with me for more than 3 decades and I have made that same offer to others.
I believe people are put in your path for a reason. Sometimes your paths just cross, and if you are lucky enough, and I was, our paths were the same for a long while. And there are two things that make a good friend. One, is that you have something in common and the other it that you can learn something from them. Dale taught me how to turn one word into two ("E Nuff") and four words into one ("whatareyouNuts?").
Christmas will never be the same.
