Walter J. Martens, Jr, 55, of Sterling, VA, passed away on January 3, 2016.
For all those who knew him, Walter was a passionate man who lived life to the fullest, and brought laughter to those around him. Intellectual, he could talk to you about anything and everything.
Being a very patriot citizen, he gave many years of his life to the United States Air Force in the service of our country. He served in Texas, Florida, Oklahoma and Arizona. He also saw action during "Operation JUST CAUSE" from Semaphore Hill in Panama while serving as an Air Weapons Controller.
Full of adventure, Walter enjoyed the thrill of fly fishing, spear fishing, deep sea fishing and scuba diving. He was also a hunter, many times bringing home venison to eat up. Walter flew ultralight aircraft and additionally obtained a private pilot's license. A strong skier, he enjoyed the advanced and black diamond trails. Among many other hobbies, Walter loved wood-working and World War II aviation.
An avid Ducatisti, Walter has been the Mid-Atlantic Ducati Club President for many years. He ensured the club was represented at different motorcycle events and charity drives. He also had the opportunity to represent the Mid-Atlantic Ducati Club in Bologna, Italy, on various occasions. His favorite motorcycles were the Ducati 888 and 900 models.
Before becoming a government contractor, Walter served as a Loudoun County Substitute Teacher, where he was recognized as Substitute Teacher of the Year on two occasions.
Walter is survived by his wife, Ivonne and son Johnathan, and daughter-in-law, Amanda. He is also survived by his parents, Walter and Marion, and siblings, Lynn Curry and husband Bruce, Karen Ponton and husband Terry, Elizabeth Reynolds and husband Patrick and David Martens and wife Lisa.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM on Thursday, January 7 at Adams Green Funeral Home, with a memorial service at the same location to follow.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association if desired.
