Joel gave so much to so many, he was one of the angels among us for so many years. His thoughtfulness and kindness were received by more than his family can ever know. His give back and service were an example for all those in Recovery. His contributions will continue in a better place. God Bless Joel, Ellen and their family.

I met Joel through the music program at Unity of Fairfax, and I loved him immediately. He was such a warm and genuine person, with a ready smile for everyone. He was a light in the world, and I know that his light still shines brightly in the hearts of everyone he touched. We will miss him, even as we know that his spirit soars onward to new adventures. Sending much love and prayers for peace to his family.

Joel's kind smile and ever-present words of wisdom are forever in my memory of the past almost 30 years. There is a special place in Heaven for this man, who shared his experience, strength and hope with others for close to 50 years, saving so many lives. The message about the Divine Plan, which he gave to Kittie, was passed to me and countless others. Wishing Ellen and the entire family peace and many loving memories of this gentle soul who blessed our lives. Love, Terry

If the greatest success one can have in life is to have a positive affect on others, Joel was successful beyond words. More than anyone else I can think of, when you spoke with Joel, you were the only, and most important person in the world to him. A remarkable human, and heaven is richer now that he is among the angels. Joy for having known him, and condolences on his passing.

Joel was a delight to work with every day. In the trenches of counseling addicts, I can still see his smile as he would sway his head to the side as we talked. He was mild-mannered and lighthearted. Spending time with both Joel and Ellen meant more smiles, laughter, and love. I feel sad in his passing and miss his presence, as I knew him.

Joel was a very special person who impacted innumerable people through his recovery work, accepting you for who you were and a shining example of living your life in grace. I will always remember him every time I recite the Serenity Prayer and Step1 in meetings, along with Let Go and Let God.

Joel was in my homeroom classes, because our names were at the front of the alphabet ... way back in Mirror Lake Jr. High .. and I do remember his wit and humor ... Looking at this picture with the sweet smile .. reminds me of a very special person ... My you feel the peace and comfort during these days of adjustment. Did not realize our birthdates were so close .. 28th for him... and 29th(though,1936) for me.. God bless you and family ...

I have known Joel since 1982. He was very devoted to what he believed in and was an inspiration to many, many, many people in Northern VA. No matter how much he had going on in his own life, he always took time to listen to me, be interested in me, etc. I will miss him very much. My prayers go out to his family.
