To the family of Mr. Bruce Wardlaw I offer my deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy. Bruce was a gentleman, a mentor, and an inspiration to me, and I will forever remember him as one of the most benevolent male figures in my life. As a young graduate student, I viewed Bruce as a hero of his field and an example of that which I wished to be. His passion for his life's work exemplified my goals as a budding geologist and would-be paleontologist. The time that he spent with me, directing me in my studies and guiding me in my aspirations was one of the most formative periods of my life. My week in Reston, Virginia in 1998 under Bruce's watch, diligently preparing conodont specimens for electron microscopy was one of the most pure and joyous experiences of my life. I like to think that I shared his love for the study of the lives of organisms that thrived hundreds of millions of years ago. For whatever reason, he welcomed me into his city, his workplace, his home....and I delighted in the fact that he, a veritable giant of his discipline, offered me the benefit of his tutelage and wisdom. Upon learning of his passing from a colleague this evening I spent a lot of time thinking about our brief time together and what he gave to me, without thought of recompense. Mr. Wardlaw, may you rest in peace. I will remember your kindness and honor your spirit and your family by endeavoring to pass along to the next generation the principles by which you lived. - D. Bruce and I were colleagues at the USGS for many years. We were important confidants through tough times and shared many challenges together. Often we would start our conversations in a serious manner, however, he and I would always be laughing our heads off by the end of our talks. He was one of the most caring, warm, human beings I ever knew. Always willing to lend an ear and offer suggestions on any problem. Wow, I was totally shocked by his early passing away. I was so shocked and sad to hear the news of Bruce's death. It is so tragic. I was looking forward to friendly debates on Permian conodonts for a number of years yet. Bruce and I shared some good times with SPS around the world and we stayed at each others homes preparing Permophiles - driving our respective wives crazy with our talk well into the evening. Bruce was a positive influence on my career as I am sure he was for many others. I will miss my colleague and friend. Jeanne please accept my deepest sympathy and my condolences to the rest of his and your family.

It was so sad to hear of Bruce's passing. He worked tirelessly to make the girls CYA basketball program a success. I'm sure many young girls were influenced by his dedication. He suggested Dennis become a coach, and coached Brittany on many teams. Bruce was an important person in our lives for many years and we appreciated him tremendously! I was a high school classmate and had the pleasure of reconnecting with Bruce at the 50th reunion last year. The stories he told of his career were fascinating and an inspiration. I'm so sad to learn of his passing but grateful for the time we had together at the reunion. My condolences to the family.

I coached in CYA basketball with Bruce and my daughter, Clare, played on one of his teams a few years ago. I was shocked to hear of his sudden passing. His contributions to coaching girls basketball were much appreciated by those of us who understood and witnessed his dedication. I'm sure his volunteer work with CYA empowered many of our daughters with the confidence to try to better themselves in all things. His loss will be felt deeply by many. We will carry on his volunteer efforts with heavy hearts.
