Obituary of Emanuel Hershkowitz

Emanuel Hershkowitz (Manny), the oldest ball boy (at age 82) at the USTA Tennis Open, according to Guinness World Records, died on May 4, 2016 at Ashby Ponds in Ashburn, Virginia. The 99 year old was a long time resident of Reston, Virginia and an avid athlete and senior Olympian.
Manny retired as a furniture salesman at Bloomingdale's and as a younger man, he worked in the fur industry as a craftsman and designer. He was born in New York, New York and grew up in Brooklyn, the son of eastern European Jewis immigrants. He was a World War II veteran and was married to Ruth Hershkowitz for 73 years. He had three children, 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Many loved sports, and up through his eighties and nineties, he often played tennis, golf, and softball. He won many medals in the Virginia State Senior Olympics, especially in track and field events, and represented Virginia several times at the National Senior Olympics. He played duplicate bridge very well and was a prolific needle pointer. His art has been exhibited several times and he received a Director's Award from a field of 600 to 700 participants at a needlepoint exhibit at the Woodlawn Plantation.
Manny is survived by his wife Ruth, children, Stephen (Louise), Jared (Fran) and Meryl (Peter); grandchildren, rana (Mark), Jo (Steve), Arianna, Brittany and Steven;; great grandchildren, James, Sean, Alan and Jason.
Services will be hald at the Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation (NVHC) 1441 Wiehle Ave., Reston, VA on Friday, May 6, 2016 at 10:30a.m. Donations may be made in his memory to the Ashby Pond Scholarship Fund or the NVHC Religious School.
