Captain William Thomas Moran passed away Monday afternoon, May 23rd, at Reston Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Mitzi Brummel Moran. Bill was born in Los Angeles, CA in 1933 and soon moved to San Francisco where he graduated from Lincoln High School. His parents were Cecile Barnard Moran and Charles Thomas Moran. He was a 1955 graduate of Stanford University where he was president of Delta Chi fraternity. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve during high school and was commissioned an Ensign upon college graduation. His first duty station was NAATC Memphis where he met Mitzi. They were married June 23, 1957. He was Executive Officer of the USS San Joaquin County, (LST 1122) home ported in Iwakuni, Japan, and then Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Training Center, Lake Charles, LA. His next assignment was the Naval Reserve Manpower Center, Bainbridge, MD. He served as First Lieutenant aboard the USS Hermitage, (LSD 34) home ported in Little Creek, VA. He worked in the BUPERS office in Washington. Bill graduated from the Naval War College in Newport, RI and was the Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Readiness Command, Region 6, in Ravenna, OH. His final assignment was in the office of the Secretary of the Navy (Manpower and Reserve Affairs). Following his retirement he commanded the NJROTC Unit at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, MD. His last position was as Executive Director of the Master Builders Assn. and Construction Contractors Council. Next Bill and Mitzi fulfilled their desire to travel, visiting over 70 countries and in 2010 they moved to Falcon's Landing Military Retirement Community. Besides Mitzi, he is survived by two daughters, Tina Moran Buckingham of Ashburn, VA, and Shari Moran Klutz of Tampa Bay, FL, and five grandchildren, Josh and Amy Buckingham and Michael, Cassidy and Matthew Trotter.
