Obituary of Freeland Glen Young Jr.

DEPUTY CHIEF FREELAND GLEN YOUNG, JR (RET), FAIRFAX COUNTY FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE Formerly of Follylick Farm on Young Avenue, Herndon, VA and beloved husband for 65 years of Norma Slack Young (deceased April 7, 2016), Freeland died peacefully on July 1, 2016 in Powhatan, VA at age 85. Born to Freeland Glen Young, Sr. and Ida Blanche Young on November 17, 1930, he was the youngest of five children. He lived the vast majority of his life on Follylick Farm. He is survived by his children: twins Jane Young Lewis and Jean Young Hudack (Charlie) and Freeland Glen Young, III (Sally); grandchildren: Dean and Geoffrey Lewis, Lisa and Marjorie Laydon, Annabelle and Charlie Young and four great-grandchildren. Freeland graduated from Herndon High School in 1948 and attended American University in Washington DC before leaving to work Follylick Farm as an active dairy and agricultural farm. Operations were scaled back to a horse farm when Freeland joined the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Service where, after 25 years of service, he retired as Deputy Chief in 1985. Freeland, always the Gentleman Farmer, created together with Norma a "little piece of heaven" on Follylick Farm where they loved working and helping family, friends, neighbors and children. They enjoyed traveling the U.S.A. and Freeland loved hunting at his cabin in Grayson County, VA which he called "a place of the heart". Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thurs, July 7 at ADAMS-GREEN, 721 Elden St., Herndon, VA. Visitation is Wed, July 6, from 5-8p.m. and one hour prior to the Thurs service.
