Obituary of Richard Rudolph Zandall

Richard R. Zandall (Rich), 85, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, passed away Sunday, October 9th, 2016. He was born January 22, 1931 and raised in Gary, Indiana by parents Rudolph and Anne Zandall. Rich is a U.S. Air Force Veteran serving during the time of the Korean War. After four years of service Rich moved back to Gary, Indiana. On January 31st, 1959 he married Kathleen Margaret Sager. They began their life as husband and wife in Rochester, MN where Rich began his career with IBM. Moves from Rochester, MN to Charleston, WVA and finally settling in Reston, VA produced four wonderful daughters and a successful 33 ½ year career with IBM. Rich was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and served in various capacities in his daughters’ PTA and Girl Scout activities. Rich was a Certified Instructor for the Dale Carnegie Courses in the Washington, DC area for many years. After spending 23 years in their family home in Reston, Rich and Katie Zandall moved to Fredericksburg, VA to enjoy retirement, and most importantly visits from the grandkids. Rich was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Mrs. Kathleen M. Zandall. Survivors include his four loving, adoring daughters, MaryAnne Zandall of Centreville, VA, Laura Moon and her husband, Mike of Carlisle, PA, Nancy Zandall Kistler of San Diego, CA and Margie Jones and her husband, Garnett of King George, VA. Grandpa Zandall has the love, adoration and respect of 8 grandchildren; Michael, Matthew, Tommy, Katie, Grant, Kate, Abby and Megan; a sister Loraine Embach who was preceded in death in January, 2016 of Mountain Home, AR, and one nephew, Thom Embach who resides in Mountain Home, AR. A military service with honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in the Columbarium where he will be united with his beloved wife for eternity. At this time the family is awaiting the interment date. Once the date has been confirmed an update will be available. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice The Man in the Glass When you get what you want in your struggle for self and the world makes you king for a day Just go to the mirror and look at yourself and see what that man has to say For it isn't your father or mother or wife who judgment upon you must pass The fellow whose verdict counts the most in your life is the one staring back from the glass Some people may think you a straight-shooting chum and call you a wonderful guy But the guy in the glass says you're only a bum if you can't look him straight in the eye He's the fellow to please never mind all the rest for he's with you clear up to the end And you've passed your most dangerous difficult test if the man in the glass is your friend You may fool the whole world down the pathway of life and get pats on the back as pass But your final reward will be heartaches and tears if you've cheated the man in the glass.
