Obituary of Kathleen Marie McCann
Kathleen Marie McCann of Reston, VA died peacefully in her sleep on November 6, 2016.
Kathleen was born in St Louis, MO on August 2, 1962 and was raised in the New Orleans, LA area. She graduated from Grace King High School in Metairie, LA in 1980 and attended Louisiana State University where she completed her pre-nursing curriculum in 1983. She then attended Southeastern Louisiana University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. Kathleen proudly served her country as a Lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserves from 1989 to 1999. In 1991 she completed her Master of Science degree from Xavier University/Charity Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesiology in New Orleans and became an advanced practice Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
Kathleen was an active member of Mensa International, the International High IQ Society, and the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
Kathleen is preceded in death by her mother, Marie Fonseca and father, John McCann. She is survived by her life partner Kelly Scherbenske; brothers John McCann, Gregory Fonseca, Olyvia Fonseca, his daughter, and fiancé Shana Donahue; Kelly’s parents Jim and Lois Scherbenske; Kelly’s brothers and sister and their families – Scott and Helen Scherbenske, daughters Ashley, Jenna, and Rachel; John and Michelle Scherbenske, sons Adam and Daniel; and Julie and Richard Whisenhunt, sons James and Ryan, and daughter Allison.
Kelly and Kathleen shared life together for the past 14 years. Their paths crossed in Baton Rouge and it was destiny. Kathleen said goodbye to her beloved Louisiana and headed to Yankee land in Northern Virginia. They set up their household in the Reston area for nine years and then packed up and moved to Texas for the following three years. In May 2016, they decided they were homesick for family and friends in Northern Virginia and returned to settle in Reston, VA.
Anyone who spent any time around Kathleen knew that she was very passionate about her nurse anesthesia career, her dogs, movies and music. Kathleen was a nurse to emulate. Her priority was always to be an advocate for the patient and to provide outstanding professional anesthesia care. Her co-workers could always rely on Kathleen and loved to see her beautiful smile.
Gautreaux, Gaston, Bailey, and Renny were just a few of Kathleen’s four-legged children. She absolutely adored them and they adored her especially when she would take them for walks, rides in the car, or dress them in their favorite costumes for Halloween.
Kathleen loved to host a “Night at the Movies” get together. She had an incredible memory and could recall scenes, lines an actor had, dates when the movie was released….she never ceased to amaze people with her recall. And when it was time to get together for a party everyone knew she was in charge of the music.
Kathleen was a blessed gift to our world, a great friend, a giving sister, loving daughter, and treasured partner. We love you Kathleen and wish you eternal rest. You will be missed more than you know.
Visitation will be held at the Adams – Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden Street, Herndon, VA, November 10, 2016 from 4-6pm followed by a Celebration of Life service from 6-7pm.
