Obituary of Kenneth Crittenden Schott
Kenneth (Kent) Crittenden Schott, 79, of Potomac Falls, VA, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016 at the Johnson Center of Falcons Landing Retirement Community with his family by his side.
Born on Dec. 5, 1936 in St. Louis, MO, he was the eldest son of the late Maj. Gen. Charles Wesley Schott (USAF Ret.) and the late Barbara Crittenden Schott. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Christopher.
Kent graduated from Williams College in 1958 with degrees in Geology and Economics, and was a member of Mensa and Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity. He received his MBA in International Banking and Finance from New York University.
In 1960, he worked as an Insurance Adjuster for American International Group (C.V. Starr & Co.) and was assigned to Guam where he met his future wife Marian. Shortly after marrying and returning to the East Coast, Kent began his 28-year career with the Central Intelligence Agency, serving primarily as a budget and finance officer for logistical and procurement services with responsibility for managing hundreds of professionals worldwide. Although their permanent home was established in Annandale, VA, his career took him and his family around the world, including Laos (where he advised during the Secret War), Mexico City, and Panama. After his retirement in 1996, Kent and Marian spent a brief time living in Fallbrook, CA while caring for his elderly mother, and ultimately settled back in Virginia at Falcons Landing.
Kent was known for his quiet and kind demeanor, his love of cherry ice cream and Coca-Cola, his pride in his Scottish heritage, and his affection for all manner of canines (particularly shetland sheepdogs, and specifically his late sheltie, Cameron).
Kent is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marian Castro; his daughters Derreth Painter of Herndon, VA, and Gwendolyn Schott of Cary, NC; and his three cherished grandchildren, Desmarais (Demi), Clifton, and Roman Painter.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016 at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Potomac Falls, VA, with Rev. Joseph Farrell officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Ballroom at Falcons Landing Retirement Community in Potomac Falls. A private family burial will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Northern Virginia Sheltie Rescue (www.nvsr.org) or Caring for Others (www.caringforothersltd.org).
