Obituary of Rose Elizabeth Smith

BETTY SMITH Rose E. Smith, nee Callan and best-known as Betty, died November 15, 2016, of pneumonia. She was born in Washington, D.C., where she met her husband, Kenneth A. Smith, on a street car shortly after the end of World War II. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Asia-Pacific Theater.  The couple were married for 66 years. Mr. Smith predeceased her in 2013. Betty Smith is survived by two children: Claire Smith of Sterling and Tim Smith of Baltimore. Her son Rev. Michael A. Smith died in 2000. She is also survived by her grandson Grant Mendoza and son-in-law Robert Leininger, as well as many relatives and friends. Betty Smith’s early working career in Washington included banking and retail. For nearly 30 years, she was a highly valued office nurse for a surgeon in Maryland, where she was also very active in her local parish, Holy Family Catholic Church, Hillcrest Heights. After retiring with her husband to Sterling in 1993, she was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Herndon, serving on the outreach and newcomers committees. Her boundless generosity of heart and spirit, along with her extraordinary optimism and faith, will be cherished by all who knew her. Viewing will be noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday, November 22 at Adams-Green Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be a 11 a.m. Wednesday November 23 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 750 Peachtree St., Herndon, VA. Interment in Union Cemetery, Leesburg, VA. Reception to follow at O’Faolian’s in Sterling.
