Obituary of Myron Mitchell Everton

Lt. Col. Myron Everton 1926-2016 Lt. Col. Myron Mitchell Everton USAF, (Ret) died on December 2, 2016. He was born in Tyrell County, North Carolina on September 30, 1926. He was a WWII veteran, having served as a Radio Officer in the Merchant Marine and U. S. Maritime Service from 1944 to 1948. He joined the USAF Aviation Cadet Corp in May 1949 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, Pilot on May 12, 1950. He retired from the Air Force in 1972 following a tour at the Pentagon. He held a Bachelors Degree in Social Studies and a Masters Degree in School Administration. Career assignments alternated between Flying posts and Education & Training posts. Flying assignments included three years as a Primary Flight Instructor, one year at Goose Bay, Labrador, flying re-supply and support for the Arctic DEW Line, four years on the “Andes Run” in Central and South America, and 13 months flying C-130 Combat Support in Vietnam with 392 combat missions. His total flying time was 6,660 hours. Education & Training posts were AFROTC Instructor, University of Cincinnati, Air University Faculty at Maxwell AFB, Alabama, Command Training Office, USAF Southern Command Panama with responsibility for the USAF Tropical Survival School, and Foreign Military Training Staff at the Pentagon. Decorations included the Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Achievement for his service in Labrador, Distinguished Flying Cross for ammunition drops during intense ground and antiaircraft fire in A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam, Bronze Star Medal with V for valor in ground combat at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Commendation Ribbon and Meritorious Service Medal for performance at the Pentagon. He joined Fairfax County Public Schools as an Educator in 1972 and served three years as Teacher at Oakton High School followed by fifteen years as Guidance Counselor at Langley High School. Lt. Col. Everton is survived by Lovestine “Tina” Everton, his wife since 1950, and five children, Marsha Everton of Lemoyne, PA, Norma Friddle of Black Mountain, NC, Laura Mayo of Fairfax, VA, M. Mitchell Everton of Sykesville, MD, and Spencer Everton of Woodbridge, VA. There are fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Falcons Landing memorial chapel on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at 2:00 pm. Burial services will be held at a future date at Arlington National Cemetery.
