Obituary of Joan B. Ehrenbeck

On December 27, 2016, surrounded by family and friends, Mrs. Joan Ehrenbeck, at the age of 87, passed away peacefully at Reston Hospital. Joan was born on January 8, 1929, in New York City, New York. While serving as a volunteer First Aid instructor, she met and eventually married her loving husband Raymond. They spent 58 wonderful years together and raised their loving daughter, Debbie. As a young woman, Joan was one of the first Mariner Scouts in the Mariner Girl Scout Program specifically designed for older Girl Scouts interested in outdoor water-based activities. She earned The Curved Bar—the highest award in Girl Scouting from 1940 until 1963– open only to First Class Girl Scouts, it served as a bridge to Senior Girl Scouting. Later, she became, a Girl Scout Leader and Camp Director for the Girls Scouts of America. In an era when very few women attained higher education, Joan graduated from Pembroke College, at Brown University with a BA in Economics. She worked for the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company as well as H&R Block. Joan was an avid volunteer at the Loudoun County Cascades Senior Center and served as a poll worker during elections. She also volunteered her time providing tax services to the elderly. Joan’s deep Christian faith served as a foundation of her life and love of family. She was an Elder and Deacon as well as Sunday School Teacher, Church Choir member, and Bell Choir member in the Presbyterian Church. Joan also served as pianist for monthly church services at Heritage Hall in Leesburg and enjoyed sharing her musical talents as a Choir Member at Falcons Landing. She cherished monthly fellowship with friends at the senior potluck dinner at the Ashburn Firehouse. In 1989, Joan and her dear husband moved from Bedford, Massachusetts to be an integral part in the lives of her family and especially her grandchildren, which she absolutely adored. Joan is survived by her loving husband, Ray, daughter, Debbie, son-in-law, Alex and her grandchildren; Sarandis (Andy), Christina, Emily and Melanie.
