Dear Cheryl,
Sincerest condolence to you and the family from Yukio Togashi in Japan. Today I happened to find this page, informing Skip, my old friend in my mind with many fond memories, passed away on January 2, 2017. It was my big surprise, and was unable to stop start sending this message to you. I worked with Skip in late 1980s, when a trilateral research project by Japan, USA and the Philippines on precious metals exploration was operated. I, Geological Survey of Japan geologist, at that time, was the leader of Japan team, while he was my US counterpart from USGS, and he was fully helpful to me throughout the project until it was successfully finished. I remember I at that time visited your home in Virginia, to see you, now remembering the scene clearly. He also sometimes came to my home in Tsukuba, to see my wife and daughters. I miss his all-time smiles. How are you and your daughters’ families in this coronavirus pandemic? I, with my wife, two daughters and their families with four grandchildren, are fortunately all right. Again, my sincerest condolence to you and the family. Yukio

Just learned about Skip's passing as I left the USGS at the begining of 1999. He was one of the nicest guys in the entire organization - always smiling, always thoughful. Deeply sorry to learn that his smile no longer lights this world.

Skip's passing is very sad, but a sadness mitigated by the joy and kindness that permeated his being. I first saw these as a high school student at Amherst, where Skip was one of my father's students. He was such an anomaly - a tough guy who's was kind, caring, and full of good natured fun. For me, these were Skip's core characteristics. He was, of course, a wonderful geologist. But it will be Skip's kindness and encouraging words, that I will miss the most.

I worked for Skip at the USGS in Denver, many years ago. He was always upbeat and excited about everything around him. When I started work on my MS thesis, he allowed me to use his fluid inclusion stage when it was not otherwise in use, and offered endless encouragement about my research. I will always remember him for being such a positive force in my early career days. My sincere condolences to all of his family and friends.

There are so many fond and fun memories of Skip starting with Amherst College days and continuing throughout the world on projects that Skip initiated and was kind enough to let me part of. Skip was one of the best to know and work with and my career was immeasurably better because of his enthusiasm, drive and insights and most of all his genuine friendship.

When Dave and I met you and Cher, you were a man of little words. However, when you spoke, you spoke volumes.
