Obituary of Hubert Randolf Lyon

On Saturday, January 14, 2017, Hubert “Herb” Randolf Lyon, age 99, passed away at Fairfax Nursing Center in Fairfax, VA with family by his side. Mr. Lyon was born on July 26, 1917 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Edgerton and Edna Lyon. In his younger years, Herb was an avid athlete that played football and semi-professional baseball where he was the pitcher and earned $25 for every game won. He was a beloved coach and mentor to many youth and was inducted into the Babe Ruth Hall of Fame in Port Washington, NY. Always an entrepreneur, early in his life Herb developed many toys for FAO Schwartz. During WWII and the early years of the Cold War, he developed cameras used on military aircraft for the Fairchild Company. He later opened and ran a successful television repair company while he raised his family in Sands Point, NY, until his early retirement. In 1976, Mr. Lyon and his wife moved to Lake Wylie, SC where he built a unique, octagonal shaped house on the 9th fairway of River Hills Country Club. As a result, and from repeated requests from friends, he turned this experience into a successful custom home design and construction company. Often found playing golf or enjoying a martini by his pool, Mr. Lyon greatly cherished spending time with the life-long friends that he made in his Lake Wylie community until moving to Northern VA, in 2013, to be closer to family. Mr. Lyon is survived by his daughter, Linda, his daughter-in-law, April, two grandsons (Scott and Drew), two grand-daughters (Kristin and Erin) and their spouses, five great grandsons, five great grand-daughters, nieces, nephews and his beloved extended “family” in Lake Wylie, SC. He is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Ann Doran Lyon, his son, Gary, and a brother and sister. The family will celebrate Mr. Lyon’s life at a Mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Herndon, VA on Sunday, January 22, at 8:30AM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you include Herbie in your personal prayers.
