My heart was broken when I heard of Ken's illness and death. I worked with him at the Embry Rucker Shelter for many years. He was a very caring individual and I am privileged to have known him. There is a hole in the universe now that will never be fixed.

Words cannot express the sadness I feel of Ken's passing. His heart was so big, that all that knew him could see it in his actions. Ken gained the respect and admiration from all the clients in his care. They all loved him, and knew that they could count on him.
I honored Ken as a good man, a fantastic artist, and a TRUE advocate for people in need.
My God keep you and your family.
RIP,
Vincent

I met Ken through Jennifer Tomlinson. He always had a smile on his face, and he was a great handy man who helped me out when needed! Since Ken loved the beach, here is a little poem to remind us that the impact Ken made on us will always be with us. The poem is by Henry Van Dyke:
I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.
Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone"
Gone where?
Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me -- not in her.
And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"

Ken worked with me on the medical outreach team with Fairfax County assisting the homeless population. He always displayed a caring and compassionate attitude not only to his co workers but the many clients we engaged with. He will be greatly missed by the entire community that he served so selflessly. My prayers are with your family at this time

Although I didn't know Ken that long, the time he spent here at NHH with his coworkers will be truly missed. It was a pleasure working with a beautiful soul. His smile alone would light up a room because you knew that he genuinely care about the souls he came in contact with. Keep shining Ken!
My deepest sympathy Bea!

To the Hinkel family:
We are deeply saddened to hear about your loss. We met Ken in September 2016 during a walk-through of his rental home in Hedgesville, West Virginia. We immediately fell in love with his home. The interior of the home was adorned with Ken's beautiful artwork and hand-picked paintings and portraits. His books on mindfulness, art, happiness, and love filled the bookshelves. Ken told us that he went through hundreds of designs before finally building the house to his desired specifications--this was very clear to the passive observer. The house was both quaint and modern--inviting, yet secluded in quiet nature. Before we even left the driveway, we decided that we wanted to move into Ken's beautiful home.
Ken's kindness and gentle spirit was evident from the moment we introduced ourselves. Ken was soft-spoken, but spoke with confidence and a contented tone. His warm personality and smile made him a pleasure to be around. Ken was always willing to help, whether it be repairing an appliance in the house or reducing rent to accommodate to the needs of his tenants--his consideration for others influenced every decision he made. My wife and I were fortunate to have known Ken through our conversations with him and from his personal items in the house. For example, in a bedside table drawer, we discovered a workbook that Ken used during his time volunteering as a mentor for adjudicated youth. When we asked Ken about the workbook, he told us how he used to volunteer by taking adjudicated youth on horse-drawn wagon excursions across the country. He then smiled and told us that the program would transform hardened youth into caring, thoughtful individuals who were disheartened by leaving the horses who had become their new companions.
During the short period in which we were lucky enough to know Ken, we were moved by his benevolence. We are grieved by the loss of someone we truly considered a friend. We cannot imagine the pain you are enduring as his family, but Ken's kindness will linger in the hearts of those who were graced by his presence. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers and we wish you the very best.
Warm Regards,
Cat & Nick

May Ken's passing be consoled in your heart, when you are ready, with the same sense of peace and comfort that he gave to so many that he served. He was one of life's great givers.
