Obituary of Mary Earnest Weaver
Mary E. Weaver, age 93, died Jan. 9, 2017 at her Brookdale Sterling apartment. She grew up in Huntington, WV but lived in Japan, Newfoundland, and throughout the United States before moving to Savannah, GA in the 1980s and then Leesburg, VA after 2000.
She graduated from Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing in 1945 and entered the Army before the end of WWII. Her first tour of duty was Tokyo General Hospital in occupied Japan where she was involved in treating patients with small pox and other contagious diseases. She exited the military for a brief time and earned a BS from University of Michigan before entering the Air Force. She ended her military career as Chief Surgical Nurse at Ellington AFB.
After a long career in nursing and teaching she became an avid quilter and founded the Geechee Quilters Guild in Savannah, GA. This passion filled much of her retired life as she traveled the world attending quilt shows and teaching quilting workshops.
After the death of her husband, Walter, she moved to Loudoun County to be near her family. She was an active member of the Leesburg Senior Center and her condominium association. Her energy was infectious and she never wanted anyone to be idle. She will be greatly missed.
Survivors: Her son Michael, daughter-in-law Linda, grandson Matthew, niece Barbara Kurtz, and nephew Richard Kurtz.
Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, date and time to be determined. E mail condolences may be made at adamsgreen.com
