Joyce was a great friend and colleague, who taught me so much about listening, communicating, and giving voice to workers. She made every campaign better, and motivated everyone around her to do better. She was funny, positive, dedicated,disciplined and determined. I admired so much about her, and appreciated her gifts. In a world where communicators "spin", Joyce did the opposite. She was guided by core values to speak truth to power and organize the voices of the less powerful. Her deep integrity was reflected in everything thing she did. She will be dearly missed, but her influence on many organizers will live on.

I had the privilege of working with Joyce for several years at Ray Abernathy's small PR firm, which was dedicated to supporting the campaigns and interests of unions and working families.
Joyce was such a gifted writers and strategist -- one of the top two (along with Ray) I have known. She also was a supportive and helpful colleague It was an honor to work alongside her for such a worthy cause.
I mourn her untimely loss and express my heartfelt condolences and sympathy to her family and friends

I believe my earliest memories are in that van driving places and playing games in Virginia and Florida and Aunt Joyce winning. We should be thankful we could say goodbye because not enough people are fortunate enough to do that.

When I went to visit Grandma and Poppie on my own during the summer, I didn't know Joyce would be there as well. It was great because she has always had a youthful character about her, so it made the experience even more fun. We played games and ate dinner and she told me about the rallies she attended, which I thought was really cool. I was really thankful to have gotten to spend that time with her.

We are all thinking of Joyce and all the great times we had together. All the really awesome east coast Christmas's together in the snow, her kicking our butts at trivia, going to Catalina and Universal Studios, and her briefly being a west coaster with us!
I know she was the strong oldest leader of her siblings and I will personally have a connection with her to be the same for the rest of my life as well.

I met Joyce in 1981 and had the privilege of working with her at SEIU for many years. I was awestruck by her gift for framing the struggles of working people with deep resonance and passion. Joyce had the ability to paint a picture so vivid that it overrode doubt and could move anyone to take a leap of faith. On top of her incredible vision, she was a seasoned strategist, a resolute organizer, and a keen communicator. Whether it was nurses standing on The Capitol steps asking: “Who will fill our shoes?,” or unemployed Fight for a Fair Economy activists demanding to know: “Where are the jobs?,” Joyce had an innate way of posing the right questions that challenged our country to do better by everyone. Joyce was indefatigable in every campaign and uncompromising in her belief that workers could win better lives for their families and their communities.
I already miss her spirit, her unconditional love of working families, and her no nonsense grit and wit. I’m deeply grateful to have worked with her and to have called her my dear friend.
